Chapter 8: Sirens in the Driveway

The sharp, piercing wail of police sirens cut through the crisp morning air, echoing off the wrought-iron gates and bouncing off the marble facade of the estate. The flashing red and blue lights painted jagged streaks of color across the white-and-gold pillars of the grand hallway. Eleanor froze mid-stride, her hands clenching into tight fists inside the pockets of her trench coat as the sound grew louder, stopping directly outside the front doors.

"You called the police?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with absolute disbelief. "You brought the authorities to our home? For a petty domestic misunderstanding? Do you have any idea what this will do to the Vance family name in the financial papers?"

"The family name was ruined the moment you raised your hand against my son," Julian replied coldly, stepping around the end of the dining table and walking toward her with measured, deliberate steps. "I no longer care about society columns, Eleanor. I care about the boy you terrorized while I was out building the empire you stole from."

Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a detective in a plainclothes suit, strode through the front doors as Arthur opened them. The heavy oak doors swung wide, letting in the cold draft of the autumn wind. The detective, a sharp-looking man with iron-grey hair and a badge pinned to his belt, scanned the opulent hallway before locking his eyes onto Eleanor.

"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?" the detective asked, stepping forward with a leather folder in his hand.

Eleanor raised her chin, desperately trying to summon a shred of her former haughtiness, though her lower lip trembled slightly. "This is a gross miscarriage of justice. My husband is engaging in a malicious civil dispute and using state resources to harass me."

"We aren't here for a civil dispute, ma'am," the detective said, his voice entirely professional and devoid of sympathy. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and felony child endangerment supported by physical evidence and verified surveillance footage. Turn around and place your hands behind your back, please."

Eleanor opened her mouth to argue, but the look in the detective's eyes told her that words were entirely useless. She cast one final, venomous glare toward Julian—a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that promised retribution—before slowly turning around as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

Leo watched from behind Clara’s apron, his small hands gripping the older woman's skirt. As the officers led Eleanor away toward the open doors, the heavy weight that had hung over the estate for years seemed to lift, dissolving into the cold morning light.
