Chapter 6: Dawn at the North Gate

The morning sun rose sluggishly over the estate, casting long, pale beams of light across the frosted grass of the lawn. Inside the main house, the atmosphere was chillingly efficient. Arthur and two other members of the domestic staff moved in absolute silence, clearing away breakfast dishes that went largely untouched. Leo sat at the far end of the long mahogany dining table, swinging his legs slowly beneath his chair, wearing a soft blue sweater instead of the stifling black suit he had worn the day before. Clara sat beside him, buttering a piece of toast and speaking to him in low, soothing tones that brought a faint, tentative smile to the boy's face.

At the head of the table sat Julian, flanked by two attorneys from Manhattan—men in charcoal-grey suits carrying leather briefcases stuffed with ironclad non-disclosure agreements, financial freezes, and custody filings.

"Everything is locked down, Mr. Vance," the senior attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Marcus, said quietly as she slid a document across the polished wood. "All joint accounts have been frozen, her personal credit cards deactivated, and the security access codes for the main house have been permanently wiped from her biometrics. She cannot re-enter this building without your express physical authorization."

Julian signed his name with a swift, aggressive stroke of his fountain pen. "And the guesthouse?"

"Surveilled and secured," Marcus replied. "Our private investigators have already begun digging into her financial history prior to your marriage. Interestingly enough, we’ve already found anomalous wire transfers moving out of your corporate accounts into offshore accounts registered under her maiden name—totaling over three million dollars over the past four years."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into hard slits. "She was embezzling from the shipping accounts?"

"Systematically and carefully," Marcus nodded, flipping to a secondary financial sheet. "Diverted through shell companies disguised as vendor maintenance fees for our European ports. We have enough evidence to freeze every remaining asset she controls and initiate criminal proceedings for grand larceny, alongside the child abuse charges."

Before Julian could respond, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open. Eleanor stood in the entryway, looking remarkably composed despite having spent the night in the austere isolation of the guesthouse. She wore a tailored beige trench coat over a silk blouse, her blonde hair pulled back into a flawless French twist. Her eyes were cold, calculating, and entirely devoid of the panic she had shown in the security room the night before.

"Surrounding yourself with lawyers and accountants at breakfast, Julian?" Eleanor asked, her voice carrying its old, melodic disdain as she glided toward the table. "How terribly pedestrian. I thought you had more class than to turn a domestic dispute into a corporate hostile takeover."
