Chapter 5: The Ghost of the Past

The study grew suffocatingly quiet as Clara’s words hung in the air between them. Julian stared at the older woman, the whiskey in his glass forgotten. The amber liquid caught the lamplight, casting a fractured reflection against the polished wood of the desk.

"What kind of rumors?" Julian asked, his voice flat, drained of the booming authority he usually wielded in corporate boardrooms.

"Accidents, Mr. Julian," Clara said, stepping closer to the desk and leaning slightly forward. "Unexplained injuries that always happened behind closed doors when their parents were away at society events. The boy was sent away to a boarding school upstate when he was nine, and he never returned home for holidays. People whispered that Eleanor had a sickness—a need to control everything weaker than her through fear and pain. When you met her at that charity gala in Manhattan, she played the part of the fragile, angelic debutante to perfection. But a tiger does not change its stripes simply because it is placed in a golden cage."

Julian felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He remembered the whirlwind romance, the rapid courtship, the way Eleanor had distanced him from his old friends and business associates during their first year of marriage, subtly convincing him that only she truly understood the pressures of his status. It had been a slow, methodical isolation—the exact playbook of an apex predator marking its territory.

"Why didn't you tell me this sooner, Clara?" Julian demanded, a flicker of frustration breaking through his exhaustion. "You’ve worked for this family for twenty years. If you knew..."

"Who would have believed an elderly housekeeper over the mistress of the estate?" Clara countered gently, though her eyes flashed with a firm, unyielding dignity. "You were enchanted, sir. Whenever I tried to hint at her coldness toward Leo as an infant, she turned it around, claiming I was senile, interfering, and overstepping my boundaries. She threatened to have me fired and blacklisted from every domestic agency in the tri-state area. I had to stay close to protect the boy. If I had left, Leo would have had no one."

Julian closed his eyes, pressing the heels of his palms against his temples as a dull throbbing headache began to build behind his brow. He had built an empire of steel and shipping lanes, yet he had failed to secure the safety of his own blood beneath his own roof.

"She’s in the guesthouse now," Julian said grimly, lowering his hands. "My legal team arrives at eight in the morning. We will dismantle her life the same way she tried to dismantle my son's spirit."

"Be careful, Mr. Julian," Clara warned softly, turning toward the door. "People like Eleanor do not go quietly into the night. When they lose their power, they look for weapons."
