Chapter 1: The Echo of Broken Glass

The grand hallway of the estate stretched endlessly, its polished marble floor reflecting the harsh glare of crystal chandeliers. White-and-gold pillars stood like silent sentinels over a household rotting from within. Leo, a young Caucasian boy swallowed by the fabric of a stiff black suit, burst through the heavy mahogany doors like a hunted animal. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, his small frame trembling as he threw his arms around Clara, the older woman in the grey uniform and white apron. Clara dropped the silver dusting cloth she had been holding, her weathered hands immediately curving around the boy’s shoulders to shield him from the cold emptiness of the foyer.
Leo buried his face into the rough cotton of Clara’s apron, his tears hot and staining the crisp white fabric. He pulled back his sleeve with a desperate, jerky movement, exposing a jagged, angry red scratch that cut across his pale forearm. The skin was swollen, raw, and unmistakably fresh. He looked up at her with terror-widened eyes, his voice breaking in a tearful sob that tore straight through the silence of the hall.
"Grandma, I want to stay with you! Mommy beats me all the time! Look!" Leo cried, his words tumbling over one another in a frantic plea for safety.
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the angry mark on the child's arm. Her heart shattered into a thousand pieces. She had suspected the bruises hidden beneath long sleeves for months, but seeing the raw evidence laid bare before her was a paralyzing horror. Before she could wrap her arms around him again, the sharp click of heels echoed against the marble. Eleanor, draped in an intricately embroidered white evening gown that shimmered under the lights, lunged forward with her hand raised high to strike the boy once more.
Before the blow could land, a heavy hand shot out from the shadows. Julian, tall and imposing in a sharp black tuxedo and silk bow tie, intercepted Eleanor's wrist mid-air with a brutal grip. His face hardened into a mask of pure fury as he locked eyes with his wife.
"Did you really hit him?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register that reverberated through the cavernous space.
Eleanor pulled back in sheer shock, her eyes darting between Julian’s enraged face and the weeping boy. Her jaw slacked as denial rushed in to cover her panic.
"No! He's lying, I didn't do anything!" she stammered nervously, her voice pitching upward in forced innocence.

Julian’s gaze narrowed into daggers. He pointed upward with intense fury, his face contorted in absolute rage.
"We are checking the CCTV cameras right now!" Julian shouted, leaving Eleanor staring in frozen terror.
