Chapter 2 - Shadows Beyond the Glass

Clara’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. She whipped her head toward the darkened window overlooking the second-story balcony. Through the sheer white curtains, a silhouette detached itself from the glass—a tall, broad-shouldered figure standing motionless in the freezing midnight rain. It wasn't a reflection. Someone had been watching them the entire time.

"Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as she shielded Lily with her body. "There's someone outside."

Julian didn’t flinch. He didn’t even turn his head toward the window. Instead, a slow, knowing smirk played at the corner of his mouth.

"I know," Julian replied smoothly. "He’s the quality control. You didn't really think I'd handle an extraction of this magnitude all by myself, did you, Clara? People in our tax bracket always have auditors."

Elena pressed her back against the hallway wall, trembling violently in her satin robe. "Auditors? Julian, you told me this was a private restructuring! You said we were just liquidating assets to start over in Zurich! You never said anything about... about watchers!"

"Quiet, Elena," Julian snapped, his eyes flashing with a sudden, chilling menace. "You wanted the offshore accounts, the penthouse, the immunity. Immunity comes with oversight. Now, are we going to finish breakfast, or do I need to remind everyone what happens to assets that lose their value?"

Clara looked down at the bowl in her hands. The milk had turned a sickly shade of grey. The cereal pieces—O-shaped oats soaked in something thick and sweet—seemed to mock her. She knew what was in there. It wasn’t just a sedative. It was a complete memory suppressant, designed to wipe a person’s mind clean over the course of twelve hours, leaving them docile enough to be transported across international borders without a single scream.

"Lily, don't look at the window," Clara murmured, smoothing the damp blonde hair away from her daughter's tear-streaked face. "Look at Mommy. Just keep looking at me."

"Is the man going to hurt us?" Lily whispered, her lower lip quivering. She squeezed her teddy bear so hard her small knuckles turned white.

"No," Clara lied, a tear finally breaking free and landing with a soft splash in the cereal bowl. "Mommy won't let anyone hurt you. Never."

Suddenly, a sharp tap-tap-tap echoed from the balcony glass.

All four adults froze. The rhythmic knocking was deliberate, slow, and entirely devoid of panic. It was a signal.

Julian adjusted the cuffs of his black shirt, his expression turning businesslike. "That’s our cue. The window is unlocked, Clara. Feed her the rest of the bowl, or I’ll open that glass myself and let the cold in."

Clara’s hand trembled so violently that the spoon rattled against the ceramic edge. She scooped up a single, soggy oat, lifting it toward Lily’s tightly sealed lips. "Open wide, sweetheart. Please. Just trust me."

Lily opened her mouth slightly, tears welling up in her wide blue eyes. But right as the spoon touched her lips, the bedroom door behind Julian and Elena was kicked violently off its hinges, crashing inward and pinning Elena to the wall.
