Chapter 12 - The Overload

The massive steel door crashed flat onto the concrete floor with a deafening roar, kicking up a thick cloud of rust and dust. Through the haze stepped Arthur Vance, his tailored suit scorched and stained with soot, holding an assault rifle with practiced, cold efficiency. He didn't look angry; his expression was entirely devoid of human emotion, like an executioner performing a routine maintenance task.
"Time's up, family," Arthur said smoothly, raising the rifle barrel toward Miller.
Miller fired twice, but Arthur had already anticipated the move, ducking behind a heavy concrete pillar as bullets sparked harmlessly against the stone.
"Thomas! Cut the feed!" Miller shouted, firing suppression rounds to keep Arthur pinned behind the pillar. "He's in the room!"
"I can't!" Thomas screamed, his face pale as ghost, his hands glued to the glowing keyboard as scrolling streams of red code suddenly began overtaking the green lines. "The algorithm is fighting back! It’s routing the neural feedback loop directly into the main grid! If I disconnect now, Lily’s brain will fry!"
Clara knelt beside the examination table, tears streaming down her face as she watched her daughter’s body arch slightly off the metal surface, seized by an invisible, electric current. Lily's eyes fluttered open—not with the dull haze of the poison, but wide and glowing with a strange, unnatural amber light.
"Mommy..." Lily whispered, but the voice didn't sound like a six-year-old child anymore. It sounded resonant, layered with a strange, mechanical echo. "The system is... complete."
Arthur stepped out from behind the concrete pillar, lowering his rifle slightly as he stared at the glowing screens and the child on the table. A triumphant smile broke across his face.
"Magnificent," Arthur breathed, stepping closer. "She didn't just accept the code, Miller. She became the server. The entire global network is mirrored in her mind right now."
Miller gritted his teeth, shifting his grip on his Sig Sauer, aiming directly at Arthur’s chest. "Take one more step, Arthur, and I’ll put a bullet through your heart before you can harvest a single byte."
Arthur laughed, a cold, mocking sound that echoed off the damp concrete walls. "You think this is about data, Detective? You think I built this empire for money? Look around you. This facility was built during the Cold War to survive a nuclear holocaust. And right now, every nuclear silo, every financial exchange, every power grid on this continent is linked to the IP address currently pulsing inside that little girl's head."
He raised his rifle, pointing it dead center at Miller's chest. "Drop the gun, Miller. Or I turn the savior of the free world into a smoking crater."
Miller hesitated, his eyes darting between Arthur and the glowing terminal.
Clara looked down at Lily. The little girl’s amber-lit eyes locked onto Arthur’s face. A strange, serene smile touched Lily’s lips—a smile that belonged to someone twenty years older, someone who knew every secret the world was trying to hide.
"You shouldn't have brought the bowls, Uncle Arthur," Lily said in that strange, echoing voice. "The milk was expired."

Before Arthur could process the warning, every single computer monitor in the bunker exploded simultaneously in a shower of white-hot sparks.
