Chapter 1 - The Midnight Spoon

The glow of the hallway light cut a harsh, yellow blade across the dark bedroom floor. Clara knelt on the cold hardwood, her beige robe pulled tight against a sudden, bone-deep chill. In her trembling hands, she held a blue ceramic bowl filled with soggy cereal and a heavy silver spoon. Across from her, six-year-old Lily sobbed quietly, clutching a worn-out teddy bear in one arm and her own matching bowl in the other. Tears cut clean, pale tracks through the dust on Clara’s face.

"Just a small bite, sweetheart," Clara whispered, her voice cracking beneath the weight of a terror she dared not name.

Lily shook her head violently, the blonde curls damp against her forehead. "I don't want it, Mommy. It tastes like metal. Why are they standing there?"

Clara didn’t dare turn around, but she could feel the heavy, suffocating presence in the doorway. Standing just beyond the threshold was Julian, his black suit crisp and unwrinkled, a stark contrast to the chaos of the room. Beside him stood Elena, her short blonde hair catching the dim light, wrapped in a shimmering satin robe. Elena’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and morbid fascination.

"You need to finish it, Lily," Clara said, her tone hardening just enough to betray her panic. "Do it for me."

Julian took a slow step forward into the bedroom, the leather of his expensive shoes clicking softly against the floor. His face was a mask of cold calculation.

"Don't force the child, Clara," Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. "If she knows it's poisoned, the fear ruins the chemical absorption."

Elena gasped, stepping back into the hallway. "You said this was going to be painless, Julian! You promised me we wouldn't involve the kid!"

Clara spun around on her knees, venom dripping from her words. "You shut your mouth, Elena! You signed the same papers! You traded our lives for a seat at his table, and now you stand there pretending to have a conscience?"

"I didn't know he'd bring bowls," Elena choked out, tears finally spilling over. "I thought it was just a clean transaction."

"There is no clean transaction when it comes to Julian," Clara hissed, turning back to Lily. The little girl stared down at the milk, her small spoon slipping from her fingers and clattering against the ceramic.

Julian smiled, a thin, cruel parting of his lips. "Time's up, Clara. She takes the bite, or I administer it to both of you right now."

Clara stared at the floating cereal flakes, her mind racing. Then, Lily whispered something that made the blood freeze in Clara's veins.
