Chapter 11 - The Cutting Torch

The screech of the industrial cutting torch biting into the exterior steel door sounded like a metal monster grinding its teeth in the dark. A shower of blinding, orange sparks sprayed through the upper seams of the threshold, illuminating the dusty, chaotic interior of the bunker.

"He's cutting through the locking pins," Miller muttered, drawing his Sig Sauer and stepping toward the doorway, taking a defensive position behind a concrete pillar. "Thomas, how much longer do you need?"

"I told you, it’s not just pressing a button!" Thomas yelled frantically, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with desperate speed, pulling up endless lines of scrolling green code on the flickering monitors. "I have to map her neural pathways against the original master code to isolate the payload! If I cut the feed a microsecond too early, she’ll be trapped in a permanent vegetative state!"

Clara stood frozen beside the examination table, holding Lily’s cold, limp hand. The little girl’s breathing had grown so faint it was almost imperceptible. Every second felt like an eternity, measured out by the relentless, whining roar of Arthur’s torch burning through the iron hinges.

"Clara," Miller said without turning his head. "Get behind the primary console. If they breach this door, the first thing Arthur is going to do is clear the room."

"I'm not leaving my daughter," Clara said fiercely, her voice steadying despite the terror gripping her chest. She picked up a heavy wrench from a nearby tool tray, her knuckles turning white.

"Listen to me," Miller said, his tone softening just a fraction. "If I go down, you pull the manual override cable from the back of the terminal. It will wipe the hard drives and fry the server. It will trap Arthur with nothing. Do you understand?"

Clara swallowed hard, her eyes locking onto the back of the detective's trench coat. She nodded slowly. "I understand."

CRASH!

The top hinge of the heavy steel door finally gave way with a deafening pop. The massive slab of metal sagged inward, held in place only by the bottom bolt. Through the smoking gap, a pair of heavy tactical boots stepped over the threshold, followed by the barrel of an assault rifle.

Bang!

Miller fired twice through the gap. A sharp cry of pain rang out from the hallway, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the concrete floor.

"Clear!" Miller barked.

"I'm almost there!" Thomas screamed, sweat pouring down his bearded face as he jammed a thick, fiber-optic cable into a heavy medical jack resting beside Lily’s head. The other end of the cable terminated in a delicate, silver-tipped needle. "Clara, hold her head still! If she flinches when the bridge connects, it will sever her motor cortex!"

Clara lunged forward, gently placing her hands on either side of Lily’s face, anchoring her as steady as a statue. "I've got her, Thomas. Do it."

Thomas closed his eyes, took a deep, shuddering breath, and drove the silver-tipped needle directly into the base of Lily’s skull.

A blinding flash of blue light erupted from the computer monitors, filling the bunker with an electric hum so loud it felt like standing inside a lightning storm.

And then, the bottom hinge of the steel door blew entirely inward.
