Chapter 8: The Plan in Motion

The restoration of the hotel’s main power grid flooded the parlor with sudden, brilliant white light, causing everyone to squint instinctively. The hum of the air conditioning returned, bringing a breath of fresh air into the tense room. Julian quickly scooped Lily into his arms before she could fully wake up and start crying. The toddler buried her face sleepily into his tuxedo shoulder, her blonde curls brushing against his chin.

“We stay together,” Julian commanded, looking between Claire and Marcus. The anger in his posture had crystallized into cold, tactical resolve. The wedding reception outside was likely descending into total chaos as guests whispered about the bride and groom disappearing mid-celebration, but exterior optics were the least of Julian’s concerns now. Survival came first.

“Marcus, get up,” Julian ordered, handing the brass letter opener back to the desk before adjusting his grip on Lily. “You’re going to lead us to the west wing service bay. If this tactical team of yours is moving into position, they need eyes on the ground, not guesswork.”

Marcus nodded stiffly, pushing himself up from the armchair and straightening his security uniform. The color had partially returned to his face, though the sheer terror of his daughter’s abduction still haunted his eyes. He walked over to the hidden service panel in the corner, pulling a small, encrypted key fob from his pocket to unlock the secondary security latch.

“The service bay is three floors down,” Marcus explained in a low, urgent whisper as the metal panel swung fully open, revealing a steep, concrete stairwell flanked by exposed steel piping. “It’s the old freight loading zone used during the hotel’s construction in the nineteen-eighties. There are no security cameras down there, which is why David chose it for the handoff. It’s completely blind to hotel management.”

Claire stepped up beside Julian, smoothing down the front of her beaded gown with trembling fingers. She reached out, gently brushing a stray curl away from Lily’s forehead. The toddler didn't stir, her breathing slow and even. Claire looked up at Julian, her eyes filled with a desperate, unspoken apology.

“I’m coming too,” Claire said, her voice leaving no room for argument.

Julian hesitated, glancing at the steep, dark stairwell and then down at his sleeping daughter. “Claire, it’s too dangerous. You should stay locked in this parlor until—”

“No,” Claire interrupted fiercely, cutting him off. “My brother used me to get to this family. He manipulated my fear to orchestrate this entire nightmare. I am not sitting here playing the helpless bride while you and Marcus walk into a trap that I indirectly helped build. I end this with you.”

Julian studied her face. For the first time since the reception table incident, he saw past the designer gown, the makeup, and the societal expectations. He saw a mother, flawed and terrified, but fiercely determined to protect the child they shared. He nodded slowly.

“Fine,” Julian said. “Stay directly behind me. If anything moves, you drop to the floor. Do you understand?”
