Chapter 2: The Empty Corridor

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom swung shut, cutting off the suffocating gasps and stunned whispers of the wedding guests. Claire led the way down the dimly lit, carpeted hallway of the hotel’s private executive wing, her elegant heels clicking a frantic, uneven rhythm against the floor. Her beaded gown scraped against the damask wallpaper, leaving a faint trail of loose seed pearls in her wake. Behind her, Julian marched with heavy, deliberate steps, still holding little Lily securely against his chest. The toddler had quieted down, sucking her thumb while clutching her ruined cupcake like a precious artifact, oblivious to the emotional tempest surrounding her.

Julian’s mind raced with a terrifying matrix of suspicion. For months, things had felt slightly askew. Little inconsistencies in Claire’s schedule, hushed phone calls that ended abruptly whenever he entered a room, and an uncharacteristic eagerness from Claire to bond with Lily, his daughter from a previous relationship who had tragically lost her mother at birth. Julian had dismissed the red flags, attributing them to wedding planning stress and the normal anxieties of blending a family. But watching his tiny daughter crawl out from beneath the reception table, wide-eyed and terrified on direct instruction from his bride, destroyed every ounce of trust he had foolishly placed in the woman walking ahead of them.

They reached a vacant private sitting room at the end of the hall. Claire pushed the door open, stepping into the dimly lit parlor furnished with velvet armchairs and a heavy mahogany desk. She turned around to face them, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The veil had long since slipped from her hair, leaving her blonde strands tangled around her tear-streaked face.

“Put her down, Julian,” Claire said, her voice dropping to a fragile plea. “Please. Let me speak to her, and then you can scream at me all you want.”

“Don’t you dare go near her,” Julian warned, his voice a low, vibrating growl as he stepped back, shielding Lily with his broad shoulders. He gently lowered the toddler into one of the velvet armchairs, kneeling beside her to ensure she felt safe. “You’ve done enough manipulating for one day. Why was she under that table, Claire? Start talking, and make it quick, because the police are the only other people I’m willing to call right now.”

Claire sank into the opposite armchair, burying her face in her hands as a fresh wave of quiet sobs racked her slender frame. The beads on her bodice caught the dim light, glittering coldly. She realized that lying was no longer an option, but telling the truth might cost her everything she had ever cared about.
