Chapter 6: Darkness in the Parlor

The sudden plunge into darkness was accompanied by the heavy, mechanical hum of the hotel’s emergency backup generator kicking in a floor below. In the amber glow of the emergency exit signs casting a faint, eerie hue through the tall windows, Julian instantly dropped into a protective crouch. He pulled Claire backward behind the heavy mahogany desk, shielding her and sleeping little Lily from potential line-of-sight through the glass transom above the door.
“Stay down,” Julian hissed, his senses hyper-focused. His eyes adjusted rapidly to the dim, amber-tinted gloom. The silence in the parlor was deafening, save for the faint, rhythmic ticking of the brass clock on the mantelpiece and the soft breathing of the toddler, who had miraculously remained asleep despite the sudden blackout.
“Julian, the power doesn't just cut out in this wing,” Claire whispered frantically, her fingers digging into the fabric of his jacket. “The executive suite operates on an independent electrical grid. Someone tripped the master breaker from the utility room down the hall.”
Julian didn't answer. He carefully unbuttoned his tuxedo jacket, freeing his movement, and scanned the room for any makeshift defensive tools. A heavy brass letter opener sat on the desk. He gripped it tightly in his right hand, testing its weight. The locked oak door remained firmly shut, but in a hotel of this size, service corridors and adjoining rooms often shared hidden maintenance panels.
Suddenly, a soft metallic click echoed from the wall opposite the door—the sound of a hidden service panel latching open.
Julian gestured fiercely for Claire to remain flat against the floor behind the desk. With measured, silent steps, he moved along the perimeter of the room, keeping his back pressed against the wood-paneled walls. The amber light from the window barely reached the far corner where a narrow, floor-to-ceiling bookshelf stood flush against the wall. A thin sliver of cool air was drifting out from behind the mahogany shelving unit.
The bookshelf began to pivot inward with a faint, oiled squeak. A tall figure stepped out from the darkened utility shaft beyond, silhouetted against the pale emergency lighting of the service corridor. The intruder wore a standard hotel maintenance uniform, but the posture and deliberate movements were unmistakably military.
Julian didn't hesitate. As the figure stepped fully into the parlor, Julian lunged forward, tackling the intruder around the waist and driving them hard into the adjacent velvet armchair. The brass letter opener clattered loudly across the polished floorboards.
The intruder grunted upon impact, fighting back with vicious efficiency. An elbow swung upward, grazing Julian’s jaw and sending a sharp bolt of pain through his face. Julian gritted his teeth, pinning the assailant’s arm behind their back with brutal strength born of pure paternal adrenaline.

“Stop moving!” Julian snarled, pressing his knee firmly into the small of the intruder’s back.
Claire scrambled from behind the desk, her white beaded gown catching the amber light as she rushed over. She dropped to her knees beside them, grabbing the intruder’s cap and pulling it away to reveal a familiar, terrified face. It wasn't a hardened criminal, nor was it a stranger. It was Marcus, Julian’s own lead corporate security director.
