Chapter 4: Shadows in the Ballroom

Julian paced the length of the parlor, his heavy shoes sinking slightly into the plush carpet. The gold cufflinks on his tuxedo sleeves clicked together with every frustrated gesture. He stopped abruptly, turning his piercing gaze back to Claire, who sat huddled in the armchair, looking smaller and more fragile than he had ever seen her.
“If David threatened you, if he threatened my daughter, why didn’t you come to me?” Julian asked, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and disbelief. “Why would you agree to hide the child? Why play along with a lunatic instead of calling the police immediately?”
“You don't understand how dangerous David is,” Claire pleaded, leaning forward, her hands clasped tightly together. “He showed me photographs, Julian. High-resolution shots of Lily playing in the courtyard of her daycare. Pictures of our nanny when she takes her to the park. He had people watching every single movement we made. He told me that the moment I involved the police, or the moment you found out, he would execute his plan immediately. He said he had an inside man right here in this hotel, someone waiting for the right moment to make their move.”
Julian ran a hand through his dark hair, pulling at the strands in sheer exasperation. “An inside man? Claire, this sounds like a paranoid delusion. Are you telling me you trusted a career criminal over your own husband?”
“I wasn't trusting him; I was trying to buy time!” Claire cried out, her voice rising before she caught herself, glancing nervously at sleeping little Lily. She lowered her tone, speaking with desperate urgency. “David told me to get Lily out of the grand ballroom right before the cutting of the cake, to take her to the service elevator on the second floor where one of his associates would be waiting to take her custody. He promised he would return her unharmed once I transferred the digital access codes to his offshore account tomorrow morning. I couldn't risk her safety, Julian. I couldn't.”
“So you decided to sacrifice our trust, to turn our wedding day into a nightmare, instead of trusting me to handle a threat?” Julian’s voice cracked slightly, the emotional weight of her unilateral decision crushing down on him. He had built his entire corporate empire on strategic partnerships, on calculated trust, and the woman he had pledged his life to had chosen secrecy over solidarity.

“I was terrified,” Claire whispered, a single tear tracing a clean path down her cheek. “And I made a terrible mistake. When I told Lily to hide under the table, it was because David texted me that he was entering the ballroom through the service doors. I panicked. I just wanted her out of sight until I could figure out a way to stop him.”
Before Julian could respond, the muted sound of a heavy door slamming echoed from the main hallway outside the private parlor.
