Chapter 9 - The Power Outage

The sudden blackout silenced the room, save for the frantic, erratic beeping of Maya’s heart monitor. The steady rhythm had broken into a jagged, erratic stutter that echoed sharply in the dark.

"What happened?" Leo cried out, his hands gripping the metal rails of the hospital bed as fear paralyzed his limbs. "Did Sterling cut the power?"

"No," Helen said, her voice tight with tension as she adjusted her grip on the syringe in the dark. "That wasn't a standard electrical failure. That was a localized facility shutdown—EMP protocols. He's locked down the entire fourth floor electronically."

A sudden, harsh red emergency light kicked on overhead, casting long, menacing shadows across the white walls and bathing Maya’s pale face in an eerie crimson glow. The heart monitor’s screen flickered, displaying a flat, warning text across the digital readout: BATTERY BACKUP ENGAGED. SYSTEM OFFLINE.

"We have to administer it now," Helen urged, her hands steady despite the chaos around them. "If the backup generators fail completely, the infusion pump will stop working entirely."

She pressed the needle into the IV port and smoothly depressed the plunger, watching the glowing blue serum vanish into the clear plastic tubing leading directly into Maya’s arm.

For a terrifying three seconds, nothing happened. The room remained suffocatingly quiet, the only sound being the labored, raspy breathing of the sleeping girl. Leo held his breath, his big expressive eyes wide with terror as he watched his sister's chest rise and fall in shallow, uneven rhythms.

Then, Maya gasped.

Her back arched sharply off the mattress, her eyes flying wide open in sudden, excruciating agony. A low, agonizing cry escaped her lips as her entire body began to violently tremble, the muscles contracting in a severe neurological shockwave.

"Hold her down!" Helen shouted, dropping the syringe and grabbing Maya’s shoulders to keep her from tearing out the IV line. "Leo, help me stabilize her arms!"

Leo lunged forward, pressing his weight gently but firmly against his sister's right side, tears streaming down his face as he watched the monitor spike into a chaotic, erratic frenzy. "Maya! Maya, look at me! I'm right here!"

The luminescent blue liquid was coursing rapidly through her veins, reacting violently with her white blood cells. Her skin grew burning hot to the touch, and a faint, unnatural sheen of sweat broke out across her forehead. The side effects Helen had warned about were hitting with terrifying speed and intensity.

"It's too aggressive," Helen gasped, frantically tapping the digital readout on the IV infusion pump, which was flashing warning codes in angry red letters. "The nanites are destroying the infection, but her cardiovascular system can't handle the metabolic overload!"

"Fix it!" Leo screamed, his voice breaking as he watched his sister's lips turn a frightening shade of blue. "You're a doctor! Do something!"

Before Helen could grab the emergency crash cart, the heavy oak door of Room 402 rattled violently. A sharp, heavy thud echoed from the hallway, followed by the sound of high-powered industrial cutting tools chewing through the manual deadbolt Helen had engaged only minutes earlier.

Sterling was outside. And he had brought backup.
