Chapter 2 - The Missing Vial

Leo burst through the swinging double doors of the pediatric ward, his heavy boots echoing loudly against the polished linoleum floor. The cold night air hit him instantly as he sprinted past the nurses' station, ignoring the shouted warnings of a startled receptionist who demanded to know where he was running. His mind raced with a singular, terrifying focus. Dr. Vance was hiding something. The way her eyes had darted toward the restricted supply closet down the hall hadn't gone unnoticed. She had talked about expensive treatments and hospital board policies, but when she mentioned the experimental serum, her pulse had visible raced against the carotid artery in her neck. Leo knew people; he had spent the last two years surviving on the streets with Maya after their parents vanished, reading micro-expressions and detecting lies out of sheer necessity. If that serum existed anywhere in this sprawling, sterile fortress of modern medicine, he was going to find it, no matter the cost or the consequences. He ducked into a dim service corridor, avoiding a cart full of soiled linens, and checked his surroundings. The emergency stairwell door clicked open with a heavy metallic thud, revealing the concrete steps plunging down into the basement levels. Without hesitation, Leo descended into the shadows, his olive-green jacket brushing against the damp walls. He navigated a maze of utility pipes and storage rooms until he found a heavy metal door marked with a biohazard symbol and a digital keypad. This was the auxiliary pharmacy, the secure vault where the hospital kept its most sensitive, high-value medications away from standard inventory logs. He pressed his ear against the cold metal, listening for the hum of refrigeration units and the muffled voices of night-shift orderlies. To his shock, the door wasn't fully latched; a small plastic wedge had been jammed into the frame by someone who had recently exited in a severe rush. Leo held his breath, slowly pulled the door open, and slipped into the freezing darkness of the pharmaceutical vault. Row after row of glowing blue storage units lined the walls, filled with countless vials, syringes, and experimental compounds that ordinary citizens never even knew existed. He began scanning the labels frantically, his fingers trembling as he sifted through refrigerated trays of synthetic proteins and gene-therapy vectors. Suddenly, a bright beam of light cut across the dark room, pinning him against the shelves as a cold, familiar voice echoed from the doorway.
"What do you think you are doing in a restricted bio-containment zone, Leo?"
