Chapter 8 - The Return to Room 402

The dumbwaiter jolted to a sickening halt with a loud metallic screech, slamming against the upper stop in the dark, cramped confines of the pediatric supply closet. Leo gasped for air, pushing his weight against the rusted access door until it popped open with a groan. He tumbled out onto the linoleum floor, scraping his knees against a stack of clean hospital gowns, but he didn't care. He grabbed the silver metallic case and scrambled out of the closet into the dimly lit hallway of the fourth floor.
The corridor was eerily quiet, bathed in the soft blue glow of the nocturnal emergency lighting. The rhythmic beep of medical monitors from distant rooms provided a haunting soundtrack to his desperate sprint. He reached Room 402, grabbed the brushed steel handle, and shoved the door open.
Maya was still lying motionless beneath the crisp white blanket, her long brown hair spread across the pillow. The heart monitor beside her ticked at a steady, dangerously slow pace, and the IV drip continued its monotonous, silent delivery of saline solution.
Leo rushed to the bedside, his chest heaving as he dropped the silver case onto the metal tray. "Maya," he whispered breathlessly, gently touching her cold, pale hand. "Maya, wake up. I got it. I got the serum."
The girl didn't stir. Her eyelids remained closed, her breathing shallow and raspy.
Suddenly, the door behind him clicked open, and Dr. Helen Vance stepped into the room. Her white lab coat was torn at the shoulder, and a faint bruise was already forming along her jawline, but her expression was fierce and resolute. She locked the door behind her with a manual deadbolt, leaning her back against it as she exhaled a ragged breath.
"You made it," Helen whispered, staring in disbelief at the silver case resting on the tray. "Sterling... did he catch you?"
"No. An old man in the archives helped me through the old dumbwaiter shaft," Leo said rapidly, his hands trembling as he popped the latches on the metallic case. "Is Sterling still behind us?"
"He's locked in the sub-basement security grid for the next ten minutes, thanks to a system override I managed to trigger from the central nurse's station before he cornered me," Helen said, rushing over to the bed and pulling on a pair of sterile latex gloves. "But once he clears those firewalls, he'll be up here with a security detail. We have very little time."
Leo opened the case. Inside, cradled in custom-molded blue foam, lay a single glass ampule filled with a swirling, luminescent blue liquid that seemed to pulse with its own internal energy. Vector-9.
Helen stared down at the ampule, her professional instincts overriding her fear as she picked up a sterile syringe from the rolling tray. "Leo, listen to me very carefully," she said, her voice dead serious. "Once I administer this, there's no stopping the reaction. Her temperature will spike, and her heart rate will fluctuate wildly. It's going to hurt her."
"Do it," Leo urged, his voice cracking with emotion as he gently brushed a stray lock of brown hair from his sister's forehead. "Save my sister."
Helen nodded, sliding the needle into the rubber cap of the ampule and drawing the glowing blue serum into the barrel. She turned to the IV line, wiped the port with an alcohol swab, and prepared to inject the compound directly into Maya’s bloodstream.

Just as the needle hovered an inch above the plastic valve, the overhead hospital room lights flickered violently and died, plunging the entire room into total darkness except for the eerie blue glow of the serum inside the syringe.
