Chapter 14 - The Ambush at the Cabin
Marcus Vance stepped up onto the porch, his sharp features illuminated by the harsh flashlight beam. He wore an immaculate gray tweed suit that looked entirely out of place in the rugged mountain wilderness, and his right hand rested casually inside his coat pocket, presumably gripping a concealed sidearm.
"Well, well, well," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying an eerie, polite calm. "The fugitive prodigy and his medical accomplice. We've been looking all over upstate New York for you, Leo."
Leo stepped back inside the doorway, his hand reaching behind him to grip the heavy wooden frame as Agent Miller and Dr. Helen Vance rushed up behind him, instantly drawing their weapons and pointing them directly at Marcus.
"Drop your weapon and step away from the porch, Marcus!" Agent Miller commanded, her voice ringing out with absolute federal authority. "You're interfering with a federal protective custody detail."
Marcus chuckled softly, raising his empty left hand in mock surrender while his tactical operatives raised their assault rifles, locking their laser sights onto Agent Miller and Helen.
"Federal protection? Agent Miller, let's be entirely realistic," Marcus smiled, tilting his head. "Your agency has jurisdiction over federal crimes, yes, but Vanguard Bio owns the patent on the land this cabin sits on, and more importantly, we own the intellectual property rights to the girl's current biological makeup."
"She is a human being, not your intellectual property!" Helen shouted, her voice trembling with barely contained rage as she stepped in front of Leo.
"Legally speaking, Doctor, anyone infused with Vector-9 signed a preliminary liability waiver upon admission to our network—signed by their legal guardians two years ago," Marcus replied smoothly. "Which means Maya is technically corporate property. And we are here to repossess our assets."
From inside the cabin, Maya let out a sudden, sharp gasp, clutching her chest as her knees buckled and she collapsed onto the living room rug.
