Chapter 9 - Clara’s Confession

In the adjacent observation room, Clara sat huddled in a hard plastic chair, a warm cup of black coffee cooling untouched between her trembling hands. Her cream-colored top was stained, her blonde hair tangled around her face, lacking its usual polished perfection. Across from her sat a junior officer taking meticulous notes, while Detective Harrison stepped into the room, closing the heavy steel door behind him with a dull click.
"He’s blaming you, Clara," Detective Harrison said softly, leaning against the cold wall. "He says you were the mastermind, that you pushed for the insurance payout so we could afford the renovations on the estate."
"He’s lying!" Clara sobbed, covering her face with her hands. Her shoulders shook violently as years of repressed guilt finally broke through her defenses. "I didn't want him to die! David promised me he would just get him out of town, send him to a clinic in Canada where he could get help for his drinking and mental health! But when David came back from the cliffs alone... the car was already burning. It was too late to undo it."
"And when Marcus showed up alive?" Detective Harrison pressed, his tone remaining calm yet piercing. "Why didn't you go to the police then? Why lock him in the cellar for the past three years?"
"Because of Lily," Clara whispered, dropping her hands to reveal tear-streaked cheeks and bloodshot eyes. "Marcus wasn't the man we knew before the accident. The brain injury... the fire... it changed him. He came back angry. He threatened to take our daughter away, to destroy everything we had built. David panicked. I panicked. Locking him down there was the only way we could think of to keep our family together."
Detective Harrison crossed his arms, staring down at the broken woman. "Your family was built on a stolen identity, Clara. And now, your daughter knows the truth. Child services were called an hour ago. Lily is currently staying with her maternal grandmother until temporary custody arrangements can be sorted out."
Clara gasped, a sharp, agonizing cry escaping her lips as the final consequence of their actions hit home. "No, please! You can't take my daughter away from me! I'm her mother!"
"You're an accomplice to a monster," Detective Harrison corrected coldly, turning toward the door. "And the worst part is, you thought you got away with it. But secrets buried under old wooden doors have a funny way of clawing their way back to the surface."
As the detective reached for the door handle, the phone in his breast pocket buzzed. He pulled it out, listened for a few seconds as the officer on the other end spoke rapidly, and his face turned stark white.
"What is it?" Clara asked, her voice trembling.

"Forensics just finished scanning the floorboards beneath the cellar stairs," Harrison said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "They found a second hidden compartment. And it contains something that proves your husband’s crimes go far beyond identity theft."
