Chapter 12 - The Healing Wounds

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the patio, softening the harsh reality of the police tape still fluttering near the cellar entrance. Lily sat on the edge of the stone fountain, her light blue dress neatly pressed, her dark eyes staring intently at the ground as she nervously twirled the silver locket she had found in the hallway. Hearing footsteps approach, she looked up, her gaze meeting Marcus’s scarred and weathered face.

Marcus stopped a few feet away, hesitant to come any closer. He saw the striking resemblance she bore to her mother, Clara, but in the curve of her smile and the intensity of her dark eyes, he saw flashes of himself.

"Hi, Lily," Marcus said softly, his voice trembling slightly. He forced his hands into his pockets to hide how badly they were shaking.

"Are you really my dad?" Lily asked, her voice small and fragile, carrying the weight of a child whose entire world had been turned upside down in less than forty-eight hours.

Marcus knelt down slowly, bringing himself to her eye level, ignoring the sharp ache in his knees from years of damp confinement. "I am, Lily. I know it’s hard to understand, and I know the man you called Daddy for the past eight years was the only father you ever knew. But I never stopped thinking about you, even when I was locked away down there in the dark."

Lily looked down at the silver locket in her small hands, opening it to reveal a tiny, faded photograph of a younger Marcus and a woman Lily had never met. "Mom said you changed after the accident. She said you were angry."

"I was angry," Marcus admitted honestly, refusing to lie to her the way David and Clara had for her entire life. "When someone takes everything you love, it’s hard not to be angry. But looking at you right now... I realize anger isn't going to fix what happened. I just want to know my daughter."

Tears welled in Lily’s eyes, but she didn't run away. Instead, she stood up from the fountain, took two hesitant steps forward, and threw her arms around Marcus’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Marcus froze for a second, overwhelmed by a wave of pure emotion he hadn't felt in two decades, before wrapping his arms tightly around her, a quiet sob escaping his throat.
