Chapter 14 - Shadows of the Past

The afternoon shadows stretched long and thin across the courthouse steps as Marcus and Lily walked toward the waiting car. The media circus had slowly dispersed, leaving behind a fragile sense of peace. Yet, despite the guilty verdict and David’s permanent removal from society, Marcus couldn't shake the heavy feeling of being watched. He paused by the passenger door, his eyes scanning the opposite side of the street where the figure had been standing moments earlier. The sidewalk was empty, save for a discarded newspaper fluttering in the autumn breeze.

"Dad? Is something wrong?" Lily asked, looking up at him with concern in her dark eyes.

"No, sweetie. Everything is fine," Marcus lied smoothly, offering a reassuring smile as he opened the car door for her. He climbed into the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel with hands that still bore the faint scars of his underground imprisonment.

As they drove back toward the historic estate, Marcus’s mind raced. The trial had exposed David and Clara’s crimes, but during the discovery phase, forensic auditors had uncovered offshore accounts and irregular financial transactions that didn't match David’s modest income as a local architect. Someone else had been funding the hush-money payments over the past decade—someone who had a direct interest in keeping Marcus buried underground forever.

Back at the estate, the police tape had finally been removed, and the property was officially restored to its rightful owner. Marcus unlocked the front door, stepping into the spacious foyer where he had lived the first thirty years of his life. The house smelled of fresh paint and old memories. Clara’s belongings were gone, packed away into storage boxes awaiting her own upcoming trial, leaving the space clean, hollow, and ready for a new beginning.

Lily ran upstairs to check her old bedroom, leaving Marcus alone in the living room. He walked over to the antique mahogany desk where his mother’s papers used to be stored. He pulled open the bottom drawer, noticing a slight discrepancy in the depth of the wood. Running his fingers along the inner panel, he felt a hidden spring latch click softly.

The drawer panel slid forward, revealing a secret compartment that neither David nor Clara had ever discovered. Inside lay a single, dust-covered audio cassette tape labeled with a date from twenty-two years ago—the exact week of the original car crash—alongside a handwritten note addressed to Marcus in his late father’s handwriting, warning him about the very brother who would eventually try to steal his life.

Marcus slid the cassette into an old player resting on the shelf, pressed play, and listened in horror as his father’s dying voice revealed a family secret far darker than mere greed.
