Chapter 1: The Weight of Folded Paper**

The autumn breeze carried the scent of lilies and cold stone through the courtyard of St. Jude’s Chapel. James stood motionless, his fingers trembling slightly against the creased edges of the note. Little Lily remained clutching his tailored trouser leg, her tear-stained cheeks flushed pink under the delicate satin headband.

"Daddy... she said it was important," Lily whispered, her tiny voice breaking the reverie of the waiting guests inside the sanctuary.

James unfolded the paper slowly, shielding it from the groomsmen standing a few yards back. The handwriting was unmistakable: slanted, meticulous, and unmistakably Rebecca’s.

> *“James, don’t look at me with doubt when you turn around. What I am about to do isn’t betrayal—it’s the only way to save Lily from the mistake we made six years ago. Check the safety deposit box under ‘Claire Hayes.’ Forgive me.”*

Claire Hayes. The name struck James like a physical blow. Claire was Lily’s late mother, who had supposedly passed away in a hit-and-run before Lily ever took her first breath. Rebecca, his fiancé of two years, had never met Claire—or so he had always believed.

Footsteps echoed softly against the flagstone. James turned, his jaw clenched, to see Rebecca stepping into the archway. Her lace veil drifted in the wind, framing a face that had shifted from bridal radiance to sheer, desperate vulnerability.
