Chapter 9

The morning sun filtered through the dusty blinds of the safehouse, casting pale stripes across the worn wooden floor. Arthur sat at the small kitchen table with his laptop open, his eyes bloodshot from staring at lines of complex code for hours. Across from him, the smartphone that had sparked the entire confrontation lay connected to the computer via a heavily shielded data cable. On the screen, a visualization program mapped out the ping coordinates of the mysterious text message from the previous night. Clara walked into the kitchen, holding two mugs of hot black coffee, and set one gently beside Arthur’s elbow. She asked if the cybersecurity specialist had managed to trace the exact origin of the digital trap. Arthur took a sip of the coffee, nodding slowly as he pointed to a pulsing red dot on the digital map. He revealed that the message had not originated from a guest room or a staff terminal, but from Victoria’s personal tablet computer. Clara paused, her mug halfway to her lips as the implications of the discovery settled over her. She asked why Victoria would lead them to the safe key while simultaneously setting a trap that nearly got them arrested. Arthur leaned back in his chair, rubbing his tired eyes with the heels of his hands as he analyzed the twisted logic of the Vance household. He explained that Victoria was playing a dangerous double game, using Arthur and Clara as blunt instruments to weaken Eleanor’s grip on the trust. By exposing the safe and tipping off the police, Victoria hoped to create a chaotic power vacuum that she could step in to fill. Clara shook her head in disbelief, marveling at the infinite layers of deception required to survive in that family for even a single day. She noted that living among them had required constant vigilance, and she was immensely grateful they were finally out of reach. Suddenly, the laptop screen flashed with a new incoming data packet—an encrypted email bearing no sender address. Arthur typed a rapid series of decryption commands, unlocking the file as Clara leaned in closely beside him. The message contained a scanned audio transcript of a private conversation between Eleanor and Harrison recorded early that morning. The audio file played through the laptop speakers with a soft hiss of static before Eleanor’s cold voice filled the small room. She was demanding that Harrison expedite the liquidation of the remaining corporate assets before the police investigation could freeze the accounts. Harrison’s voice followed, warning her that Arthur’s possession of the original patents made liquidation legally risky without a settlement. Eleanor scoffed in the recording, stating she would rather burn the entire company to the ground than let Arthur and that nobody he married inherit a single cent. Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine, recognizing the absolute malice in the matriarch’s calculated words. Arthur closed the laptop lid with a definitive snap, his expression hardening into absolute resolve. He told Clara it was time to take the fight directly to the corporate boardrooms, bypassing the family entirely.
