Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Arthur and Clara, plunging them into the dimly lit, wood-paneled hallway of the sprawling estate. Portraits of stern ancestors lined the walls, their painted eyes seeming to judge the young couple as they made their slow escape toward the foyer. Clara leaned heavily against Arthur, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly wearing off and leaving her body trembling with exhaustion. Arthur kept a steady, protective arm around her shoulders, his free hand gripping the phone in his pocket as if it were a weapon. They paused near the grand staircase to catch their breath away from the oppressive atmosphere of the dining room. Clara looked up at her husband, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of profound relief and lingering anxiety. She whispered that Eleanor would never forgive them for exposing the truth about her father’s patents in front of the extended family. Arthur pressed a soft kiss to the top of Clara’s head, assuring her that he no longer cared about forgiveness or inheritance from people who measured human worth by social hierarchy. He explained that he had spent the entire evening tracking the digital footprint of the message he received, discovering it originated from within the estate’s private server network. This revelation meant someone inside the house had been actively plotting against Clara, feeding coordinates to the family members to orchestrate her humiliation. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she realized the danger was not just from the matriarch’s general cruelty, but from a targeted betrayal by someone living under the same roof. Before they could discuss who among the household staff or family might be responsible, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway. One of the women in dark dresses, Victoria, rounded the corner with a breathless expression, her elegant heels clicking sharply against the polished wood. Victoria stopped a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly in front of her dress as she looked at Arthur with desperate urgency. She claimed she came to warn them that Eleanor was already calling the family lawyers to cut Arthur out of the trust completely. Arthur stared at his cousin with cold skepticism, recognizing the opportunistic nature that defined every member of the Vance lineage. He asked Victoria what she stood to gain by playing the messenger of doom, knowing that nothing within these walls ever happened without a selfish motive behind it.
