Chapter 6

The rhythmic sound of approaching footsteps grew louder and more frantic, shaking the old floorboards outside the archive room. Arthur shoved the documents hastily into his jacket pocket, grabbing Clara’s hand with desperate urgency. There was no time to lock the safe or cover their tracks; the trap had sprung precisely as calculated. They rushed toward the narrow service door at the back of the archive room just as the main wooden entrance was thrown open with a violent crash. In the beam of the hallway light, Eleanor stood flanked by two private security guards in dark uniforms, her face twisted into a mask of bitter triumph. The matriarch commanded the guards to seize the thieves, her voice echoing sharply off the high vaulted ceiling. Arthur pushed Clara through the service door, stepping out onto the exterior metal fire escape just as a security guard lunged forward to grab his shoulder. Arthur spun around, delivering a sharp elbow strike that knocked the guard back into the doorframe, buying them precious seconds. The cold night air hit their faces immediately as they stepped out onto the rusted platform overlooking the sprawling estate gardens below. Clara descended the metal stairs with agonizing slowness, her swollen belly and bruised knee making every downward step a painful challenge. Arthur stayed close behind her, using his body as a shield against the chilly wind and any potential pursuit from above. Below them in the courtyard, the flashing red and blue lights of an arriving police cruiser cut through the darkness, illuminating the manicured hedges in an eerie glow. Clara looked down in despair, realizing that Eleanor had anticipated every possible move they could make tonight. Arthur grabbed her hand tighter, whispering that they had the stolen documents and that was all that mattered right now. They reached the bottom of the fire escape just as a pair of uniformed police officers rounded the corner of the building with flashlights drawn. The officers ordered them to halt immediately and keep their hands visible in the harsh glare of the cruiser lights. Arthur raised his hands slowly, stepping slightly in front of Clara to shield her from the direct line of sight. He identified himself calmly, stating that they were victims of unlawful detention and harassment on private property. One of the officers stepped forward, recognizing Arthur’s name from local business registries, and hesitated before lowering his weapon slightly. Before the situation could deescalate, Eleanor appeared at the top of the metal stairs, wrapped in a heavy fur coat despite the indoor climate she had just left. She pointed a trembling finger down at them, shouting that these intruders had broken into her private safe and stolen irreplaceable family heirlooms. The police officers exchanged worried glances, caught between the prominent matriarch of the estate and the legal standing of a Vance family heir.
