Chapter 9: The Anatomy of a Scandal

While peace reigned in Camden, the house of cards in Boston collapsed into a public, catastrophic freefall.

In June, *The Wall Street Journal* published a front-page investigative report: **VANCE CAPITAL FRAUD: HOW SPECULATIVE OFFSHORE DERIVATIVES THREATEN MAJOR MERGER.**

The report exposed that Julian Vance had secretly transferred $45 million in corporate client reserves to a private hedge fund in Bermuda managed by Victoria Sterling’s brother—a fund that had suffered total capital destruction following illegal short positions.

To compound the crisis, Victoria Sterling was arrested in Miami for wire fraud and money laundering.

The high-society allies who had applauded Julian at the Copley Plaza vanished overnight.

The board of directors of Vance Capital convened an emergency Sunday session, voting unanimously to strip Julian of his Chief Executive Officer title, revoke his executive stock options, and initiate civil recovery proceedings.

Julian sat in his empty penthouse on Beacon Hill, surrounded by half-packed designer luggage and eviction notices from the building’s trustees.
