Chapter 6: The Golden Process Server

By mid-January, the outside world breached the perimeter.
A black executive SUV drove down the gravel lane to Point Silence. A senior litigation attorney named Richard Croft stepped onto the porch, carrying a leather portfolio.
Emma answered the door wearing a wool cardigan, holding six-week-old Clara securely in an ergonomic wrap against her chest.
""Dr. Vance,"" Croft said, tipping his hat with calculated, professional deference. ""Mr. Julian Vance has authorized me to deliver this comprehensive parental reconciliation and post-nuptial covenant.""
Emma leaned against the doorframe, her face serene and calm. ""I am listening, Mr. Croft.""
""Mr. Vance offers an unconditional $10 million settlement deposited into an irrevocable trust for the child,"" Croft stated, opening the portfolio. ""He will purchase an eight-acre oceanfront estate in Marblehead, fully staffed with private security and nursing personnel. In exchange, you will execute a joint public reconciliation statement, dismiss all divorce filings, and return to the marital residence in Boston.""
Emma looked at the document. She didn't read past the first page.
""Tell Julian two things, Mr. Croft,"" Emma said, her voice ringing clear through the crisp winter air. ""First, my daughter's dignity is not for sale at any price. Second, my legal counsel, Maya Chen, will serve him with our formal divorce petition at his board meeting on Monday morning. Have a safe drive back to Boston.""

Emma closed the heavy wooden door, turned the brass deadbolt, and walked back into the warm living room to nurse her daughter by the fire.
