Chapter 10: The Deposition of Truth

On July 14, the mandatory pre-trial evidentiary hearing for *Vance v. Vance* was held at the Cumberland County Superior Courthouse in Portland.
Julian sat at the defense table in a rumpled charcoal suit, his face thin, dark circles under his hollow eyes, flanked by two junior attorneys.
Emma sat opposite him wearing a tailored navy blazer and ivory silk shirt, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant knot, holding herself with magnificent, serene composure.
Her attorney, Maya Chen, laid three thick binders on the judge's bench.
""Your Honor,"" Maya Chen began, ""we present the comprehensive forensic accounting logs showing Mr. Vance’s systematic diversion of marital assets to offshore accounts, alongside verified private investigator reports detailing his continuous infidelity during Dr. Vance’s high-risk pregnancy.""
Julian’s attorney tried to object. ""Mr. Vance is seeking joint legal custody and fifty-percent residential access!""
Judge Eleanor Harrison—a seasoned family court jurist—looked over her glasses at Julian.
""Mr. Vance,"" Judge Harrison stated, her voice cold and cutting. ""You have not visited this child once in seven months. You have contributed zero dollars to her medical insurance, while facing federal grand jury subpoenas for securities fraud. You have treated this proceeding as an extension of your corporate ego.""
The judge turned to Emma, her expression softening into profound respect.
""Dr. Vance, your petition for sole legal and sole physical custody is granted in full. The respondent’s visitation rights are suspended pending the resolution of his federal criminal proceedings.""
The gavel came down with a firm, resounding crack.
Emma closed her eyes, letting out a long, quiet breath.
