Chapter 8

Inside the dimly lit storage unit, Elena unearthed a stack of charcoal sketches she hadn't laid eyes on in over a decade. Each stroke of the pencil carried the raw energy of a woman who believed her voice mattered, a stark contrast to the silenced, compliant wife Arthur had spent years molding into a decorative accessory. She traced her fingers over a portrait she had drawn of her younger sister, who had passed away years before Arthur entered her life. A quiet tear finally escaped her eye, tracking cleanly down her cheek without the histrionics or dramatic gasps Arthur always mocked as weakness. Marcus stepped quietly into the unit, his massive frame dwarfing the narrow aisle between the stacked boxes. He didn't speak, but he reached down and carefully lifted a heavy wooden crate filled with framing supplies, balancing it effortlessly on his shoulder. "This the heavy stuff?" Marcus asked, his voice low and steady. Elena nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "That's everything. The canvases and the journals. The rest can stay." They loaded the truck in efficient silence, the rhythmic thud of boxes being arranged in the truck bed acting as a percussion section to their quiet emancipation. Just as Marcus slammed the tailgate shut, the sweeping beam of a distant headlight cut across the corrugated metal walls of the facility, followed by the unmistakable low purr of a high-end European engine idling near the front gate. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat as ice water flooded her veins. Marcus stepped instantly in front of her, his hand resting casually near the heavy wrench tucked into his back pocket. "Stay behind me," he whispered, his eyes locking onto the access road leading to their unit. A sleek black sedan crept around the corner, its headlights cutting through the darkness and illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The car stopped fifty feet away, the engine dying with a soft electronic click. The driver’s side door opened, and a tall silhouette stepped out into the glow of the security lights, adjusting the cuffs of a familiar black suit. It was Arthur.
