Chapter 10

Arthur’s hands glanced harmlessly off Marcus’s solid chest, the force of his own push sending him stumbling backward onto the gravel. He caught his balance with an undignified scramble, his tailored suit jacket twisting awkwardly around his shoulders. The veneer of untouchable corporate power was entirely gone, replaced by the flailing desperation of a man whose control was slipping permanently through his fingers. "You're making a catastrophic mistake," Arthur hissed, pointing a trembling finger at Elena. "She signed a non-disclosure agreement. She’s bound to my estate by financial covenants you can't even begin to comprehend. I will sue you both into destitution. I will strip every single painting, every dime, every breath she takes until she crawls back to me on her knees." Elena stepped forward, her expression hardening into absolute granite. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the simple silver wedding band Arthur had forced onto her finger ten years ago, and tossed it onto the gravel at his feet. The metal ring clinked softly against a stone, rolling a few inches before coming to a rest near Arthur’s polished leather shoe. "Keep the house, Arthur," Elena said, her voice steady and clear in the night air. "Keep the bank accounts, the investments, and the titles. I don't want a single cent of your blood money. I am cutting the cord right here, right now." Arthur stared down at the ring lying in the dirt, his mind visibly struggling to process a reality where money and intimidation failed to secure compliance. Marcus stepped to the driver’s side of his truck, pulling open the door and gesturing for Elena to climb inside. "We’re done here, suit," Marcus said, hoisting himself up into the cab. Elena climbed into the passenger seat, pulling the heavy door shut with a solid, satisfying click that echoed louder than any of Arthur’s threats. Marcus put the truck in reverse, his tires spitting gravel as he spun the wheel, leaving Arthur standing alone in the circle of security light, staring dumbly at a tiny silver band in the dust. The pickup accelerated down the asphalt access lane, leaving the storage facility and Arthur Vance far behind in the rearview mirror.
