Chapter 2

The impact of the heavy hand on Arthur Vance’s shoulder stopped his tirade mid-breath, cutting off his shrill condemnation of Elena’s clumsiness. Arthur tried to shrug off the grip, his corporate arrogance blinding him to the physical reality of the man standing behind him. He spun around, his mouth open to hurl an insult at whoever dared interfere in a private family matter, but the words withered in his throat. The bald biker towered over him, radiating a quiet, absolute authority that made Arthur’s thousand-dollar suit feel like tissue paper. The biker’s face was carved from granite, devoid of anger or theatrical menace, which made his presence all the more terrifying. Elena lowered her hand from her cheek, her dark eyes shifting from Arthur’s pale, sweat-slicked face to the calm, scarred visage of the stranger. In the background, the neon "Open" sign buzzed with a dull, intermittent flicker, casting a sickly pink glow over the scene. The biker didn't raise his voice, nor did he ball his fists; he simply leaned down until his lips were inches from Arthur’s ear, invading his personal space with absolute impunity. "You’re breathing your last free breath, suit," the biker muttered, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated straight through Arthur’s sternum. Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper, realizing that no amount of money or legal threats would save him here in this isolated diner off the interstate. The biker’s silver ring caught the fluorescent overhead light as he maintained his grip, a silent anchor holding Arthur in place while the rest of the world held its collective breath. Elena watched from across the small table, her breathing shallow and controlled, witnessing a reversal of power that had been decades overdue.
