Chapter 8 - The Visitor in the Driveway

The phone on the floor continued to vibrate aggressively, the screen illuminating the tiled kitchen floor with a steady, pulsing glow. Ryan stared down at it, paralyzed by the sheer accumulation of disasters crashing down around him in less than an hour.
Officer Miller, standing near the doorway with his radio crackling softly, glanced down at the screen before looking back up at Sarah. "Mrs. Vance, are you expecting anyone else this morning? Because our perimeter unit just reported an unauthorized vehicle pulling directly into your driveway, bypassing the police blockade."
Sarah frowned, walking cautiously toward the front window that looked out over the manicured lawn. Parked squarely behind the second police cruiser was a sleek, dark gray luxury sedan. The driver's side door swung open, and a tall, impeccably dressed man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped out onto the pavement. He adjusted his tie, smoothed his silver-streaked dark hair, and strode purposefully toward the front porch with the aura of someone who owned the very ground he walked on.
"I don't know who that is," Sarah murmured, her hand hovering near the glass. "I've never seen that car or that man in my life."
Ryan stumbled forward, peering over Sarah’s shoulder through the sheer curtains. The color drained completely from his already pale face, leaving him looking ghost-like under the morning light.
"Oh god," Ryan gasped, clutching the edge of the windowsill for support. "No. Not him. How does he even know where we live?"
Sarah turned sharply to face her husband, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. "You know him? Ryan, who is that man?"
Before Ryan could stammer out an explanation, the heavy brass front door rattled violently as a firm, authoritative knock echoed through the foyer. Officer Miller placed a hand on his service weapon, stepping into the hallway with tactical precision.
"Stay back in the kitchen," Officer Miller ordered, raising his voice toward the front door. "Police department. Step away from the threshold and identify yourself."
The front door didn't open; instead, a muffled voice spoke clearly through the heavy wood. "My name is Harrison Cross. I’m federal counsel representing the federal asset forfeiture division. I believe you have a Martha Vance in custody, and I need a word with the primary deed holder regarding the financial liabilities of this property."
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at Ryan, whose knees finally buckled, sending him sliding down the hallway wall until he sat crumpled on the hardwood floor, staring blankly ahead.
"Federal counsel?" Sarah repeated, her voice laced with disbelief. "Ryan, what does the federal government have to do with this house? What did your mother actually do?"
Ryan didn't look up. He stared at his own shaking hands, a bitter, defeated laugh escaping his lips. "She didn't just forge a second mortgage, Sarah. She didn't just steal your bracelet or run a petty shell company. My mother... she used this entire property as collateral for a massive corporate bailout tied to an international embezzlement ring that went under federal investigation six months ago."
Sarah felt the room spin around her. The bright, cheerful kitchen, the spilled makeup, the platinum ring—everything dissolved into the background of a terrifying reality. She wasn't just a woman leaving a broken marriage; she was standing in the epicenter of a federal crime scene.
Officer Miller unlocked the front door and pulled it open, his hand still resting cautiously near his holster. "Mr. Cross. Step inside slowly and keep your hands where I can see them."
Harrison Cross stepped into the foyer, his sharp eyes instantly bypassing the officer to lock directly onto Sarah. He offered a tight, professional nod, bypassing the formalities as he pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase.
"Mrs. Vance, I presume," Harrison said, his voice deep and commanding. "I’m afraid I have some urgent news regarding your legal standing. As of eight o'clock this morning, this entire estate, along with all associated personal bank accounts, has been frozen under a federal asset seizure warrant. You have less than twenty minutes to gather your personal belongings and vacate the premises."

Sarah stood frozen in the doorway, the magnitude of the disaster crushing down on her chest. But as Harrison opened his briefcase to reveal a series of signed documents bearing Ryan’s signature alongside his mother's, a detail caught her eye—a detail that proved Ryan had lied about his level of involvement from the very beginning.
