Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Clash

The brightness of the kitchen felt cruel, bouncing off the stark white tile floor where Sarah’s scattered makeup and spilled handbag lay like wreckage. Martha’s hand was still hot on the back of Sarah’s neck, the older woman’s short grey hair bristling with raw fury as she gripped the dark red blouse she had been twisting.
"You little thief, let go of me!" Martha shrieked, her voice cracking with calculated malice as she shoved Sarah backward against the granite counter.
Sarah stumbled, her breath catching in her throat as she caught her balance, her cream-colored shirt wrinkled and her shoulder-length brown hair falling in disarray across her face. Her chest heaved with a mixture of shock and profound betrayal.
"Ryan, stop her!" Sarah cried out, her voice trembling with hot tears as she looked toward the man standing frozen near the pantry.
Ryan stood in his light grey button-down shirt, his dark hair messy, his hands hovering uselessly in the air. He looked like a spectator at his own execution, completely paralyzed by the domestic war zone erupting around him.
Sarah’s eyes locked onto Martha’s furious glare. Slowly, deliberately, Sarah reached up with trembling fingers to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, the physical sting of the assault fading into a cold, hardened resolve.
"She stole my bracelet," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper that cut through the sterile hum of the refrigerator.
Martha scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "You are unstable, Sarah. Always imagining things to cover up your own carelessness."
Sarah didn’t flinch. Instead, she looked directly at Ryan, whose anxious eyes darted nervously between the two women. With a sharp, decisive movement, Sarah twisted the platinum band from her finger. The gold and diamonds caught the harsh overhead light for a fraction of a second before she flicked her wrist, sending the ring flying across the kitchen. It bounced off Ryan’s chest and stuck awkwardly to the fabric of his shirt.
"Keep it with your mother," Sarah said firmly, her tone devoid of the love that had once defined their marriage.
Ryan caught the ring in his palm, his face draining of all color as the gravity of the gesture finally landed. But Sarah wasn’t looking at him anymore. Her thumb swiped across the screen of her smartphone, her gaze fixed on something intense and glowing off-camera.
Ryan took a frantic step forward, his voice tight with sudden, unadulterated panic.
