Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Text

The sharp chime of the incoming text message pierced the heavy silence of the kitchen, drawing every eye in the room down to the sleek black smartphone lying facedark on the white tiles where Ryan had dropped it.
Officer Miller frowned, stepping past Ryan to retrieve the device. He glanced at the illuminated screen before looking up with a sharply raised eyebrow. "Mr. Vance, your phone is receiving an automated alert from a local financial institution. It appears someone just attempted a massive wire transfer from an auxiliary account tied to this property."
Martha’s head snapped up, her panic momentarily masking her fury. "No... that's impossible. The authorization codes are locked in my safe!"
Ryan stared at his mother in absolute disbelief, the final threads of his filial loyalty snapping cleanly in two. "You had another account? Mom, how many secrets have you been keeping behind my back?"
Officer Miller held up a hand to maintain control of the escalating room. "Step back, everyone. No one touches any devices. We need to trace the IP address of this transaction immediately. This is no longer just a domestic dispute or a local forgery case; we are looking at potential interstate wire fraud."
Sarah stood silently near the doorway, watching the structural collapse of the Vance family dynamic with a chilling sense of detachment. The man she had loved, the man she had built a life with for five years, was a stranger standing in the wreckage of a life built entirely on deception. Ryan looked over at her, his eyes begging for a crumb of sympathy, a sign that she would still be there when the dust settled. But Sarah gave him nothing. Her face remained a mask of cold, unyielding resolve.
"Officer," Sarah said clearly, cutting through the murmurs of the room. "The safe she mentioned is located in the master bedroom closet behind the false cedar panel. If she has auxiliary financial accounts, the physical ledger and hard drives will be stored in there."
Martha’s face contorted into a mask of pure hatred. "You treacherous little bitch! You've been going through my things? You have no right!"
"I have every right when my name and credit score are tied to this sinking ship," Sarah retorted, her voice cutting like glass.
Officer Miller nodded to his partner. "Secure the master bedroom. Let's see what else Mrs. Vance has hidden away."
As the second officer moved briskly down the hallway toward the bedroom, Ryan sank heavily onto a kitchen stool, burying his face in his hands as quiet, ragged sobs shook his shoulders. The realization that his mother was not just overbearing, but actively criminal and malicious, was breaking his mind in real-time.
"I'm sorry," Ryan choked out into his palms. "Sarah, I swear I didn't know. I was so blind."
"Being blind was a choice, Ryan," Sarah said softly, her words carrying a heavy, final weight. "You chose comfort over truth every single time."
Before Ryan could formulate a defense, the second officer emerged from the hallway, his face grim as he carried a heavy metal lockbox and a thick stack of printed bank statements, placing them squarely on the kitchen counter.

"Officer Miller," the second officer reported, flipping open the lockbox. "You're going to want to see this. These accounts aren't just funded by the second mortgage. They're tied to an offshore shell company registered under a completely different name."
