Chapter 5 - The Officer’s Ledger

The two police officers stepped into the foyer, their heavy duty belts clinking rhythmically against their uniforms as they surveyed the tense domestic scene. Officer Miller, a weathered veteran with sharp eyes, took in the scattered makeup on the kitchen floor, Martha’s trembling posture, and Ryan standing frozen with a wedding ring clutched in his hand.
"Alright, folks, dispatch received a call regarding a domestic disturbance and a financial dispute," Officer Miller said, his voice deep and authoritative. "Who is the primary complainant?"
Sarah raised her hand slightly, stepping forward from the hallway threshold. "I am, Officer. My name is Sarah Miller. I live here. I need to file a report for assault, grand larceny, and document forgery."
Martha gasped, taking a sharp step forward. "She's lying! Officer, she's having a mental breakdown. She attacked me, and now she's making up wild accusations because she wants to force us out of our family home!"
Officer Miller glanced at Martha, noting the aggressive tension in her posture, then looked back at Sarah, whose calm demeanor contrasted sharply with Martha's frantic outbursts. "Ma'am, let's take this one step at a time. Do you have physical evidence of an assault?"
Sarah reached up, gently touching the back of her neck where Martha's fingers had dug in just minutes prior. "My skin is bruised, and we have security footage of the physical altercation in the kitchen. We also have footage of this woman—Martha Vance—stealing my antique diamond bracelet from my closet three days ago."
Ryan stepped forward, his face pale and contorted with inner turmoil. He opened his hand, revealing the platinum wedding ring resting heavily in his palm. "Officer... she's telling the truth about the theft. And... and there's more."
Officer Miller turned his attention to Ryan. "And you are?"
"Ryan Vance. Sarah's... husband," Ryan swallowed hard, his voice barely audible. "My mother forged my signature on a second mortgage for this property. I just saw the digital documents on my wife's phone."
Martha let out a piercing wail of betrayal, pointing a trembling finger at her son. "You traitor! I did it for us! I did it to keep that gold-digger from stripping us of everything we own!"
Officer Miller held up a hand, silencing the room instantly. "Alright. Everyone step away from each other. Sir, I need you to hand over your phone with those digital documents. And ma'am, I need you to sit down at the kitchen island. We are going to sort this out methodically."
As the second officer stepped in to take statements and secure the digital evidence, Sarah watched the unfolding chaos with a detached sense of relief. The nightmare was finally coming to light, but as she looked at Ryan’s defeated posture, she realized the collateral damage was far greater than she had ever imagined.
Officer Miller stepped close to Sarah, lowering his voice. "Mrs. Vance, based on the preliminary evidence and the visible marks on your neck, we have grounds to bring the older woman down to the station for questioning regarding the assault and the forgery."
Sarah nodded slowly, her eyes drifting toward the living room where her packed suitcase sat by the sofa.
"Do it," Sarah whispered.

Before the officer could radio for transport, Ryan’s phone chimed loudly with an incoming text notification from an unknown number, flashing a preview message on the screen that made Ryan drop the device onto the tile in sheer horror.
