Chapter 6: The Federal Warrant

The crisp snap of steel handcuffs securing Marcus’s wrists echoed hollowly through the banquet hall, but the theatrical display offered Elena no comfort. She watched the federal agents execute the arrest with practiced precision, knowing intimately that Marcus was playing a long, dangerous game where he always held the winning hand.
Special Agent Vance stepped away from Marcus, his expression grim as he walked toward Elena. He unfolded a thick packet of legal documents, the pages stamped with federal seals and judicial signatures.
“Elena Vance,” the agent read aloud, his voice devoid of emotion. “You are formally served with a federal asset seizure warrant and a temporary detention order pending arraignment. As the primary registered officer of the holding entity that received the twelve million dollar transfer, you are facing a mandatory minimum of twenty years under federal racketeering statutes.”
Julian strained against his zip-ties, his face flushed with anger. “That’s complete insanity! Look at the audit logs! Marcus forged her signature on every single corporate filing. She didn’t even know the holding entity existed until two hours ago!”
Agent Vance glanced coldly at Julian before returning his focus to Elena. “Then your attorney can present those arguments to a federal magistrate during your bail hearing on Monday morning, Mr. Miller. Right now, the physical evidence, the digital transfer logs, and the corporate registry all point directly to Mrs. Vance.”
Elena stared at the dense block of legal text on the warrant, her eyes burning with suppressed tears. She didn't cry—exaggerated grief would only be twisted by Marcus’s legal team into a confession of guilt. Instead, her mind raced through every interaction she had shared with Marcus over the past two years. The quiet dinners, the romantic weekend getaways, the sudden insistence on a destination wedding in this isolated, high-end venue—it was all meticulously staged to ensure there were no independent witnesses to her innocence.
Marcus turned around, his wrists cuffed in front of him rather than behind—a small concession the federal agents had inexplicably granted him. He looked at Elena with a gaze so chillingly empty that it sent a shiver down her spine.
“You should have just taken the settlement I offered you last month, Elena,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying just enough volume for the federal agents to hear. “I tried to protect you from your own financial recklessness. But ambition makes fools of us all.”
“You’re a monster, Marcus,” Elena whispered, her voice steady despite the overwhelming despair crushing her chest.
“No, my love,” Marcus replied, offering a faint, condescending smile as the agents began escorting him toward the exit. “I’m simply a survivor.”
As the heavy mahogany doors closed behind Marcus and the federal escort, Agent Vance gestured to the junior officers to remove Elena’s restraints. The plastic ties fell away, leaving raw red marks around her wrists.
“You’re being released into federal custody under house arrest,” Agent Vance said, handing her a tracking anklet. “Put it on. Your temporary residence has already been established at your downtown penthouse. A security detail will ensure you don’t leave the premises.”
Elena took the cold metal band in her hand, realizing with a sinking heart that the penthouse wasn't a sanctuary—it was a gilded cage designed to keep her isolated while Marcus dismantled the final pieces of her defense.

She turned to Julian, who was rubbing his chafed wrists, and whispered her next move, unaware that the federal agent’s lapel recorder was capturing every single word.
