Chapter 3: The Trap Closes

The rhythmic wail of approaching sirens cut through the heavy night air, growing louder by the second as police cruisers converged on the venue. Inside the banquet hall, the atmosphere had shifted from tense confrontation to suffocating containment. Julian dropped his hands from the groomsmen, his face pale as he realized the tactical checkmate Marcus had executed.

“You called them,” Julian said, his voice flat with disbelief.

Marcus didn’t bother to deny it. He walked over to the bar cart, poured himself two fingers of scotch, and swirled the amber liquid against the glass. “Of course I did. A prudent businessman always controls the narrative. When the authorities arrive, they will find my brilliant, ambitious wife sitting at the head table with the complete financial ledger of a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme in her lap, while her disgruntled former business partner—that’s you, Julian—attempts to flee the scene.”

Elena slowly stood up from the chair, the heavy silk and tulle of her wedding dress whispering against the floor. She refused to cower. She walked around the table, putting distance between herself and the incriminating documents, though she knew the forensic imprint of her fingerprints was already all over the paper.

“You underestimated me, Marcus,” Elena said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. “You assumed I would panic, sign whatever plea bargain your corporate lawyers drafted, and disappear quietly into the background.”

Marcus paused, the glass halfway to his lips. For a fraction of a second, the theatrical charm flickered, revealing the calculating sociopath beneath. “And what are you going to do, Elena? You have no money of your own. Your personal accounts were frozen by the federal freeze order executed this morning. You are legally, financially, and socially isolated.”

“Am I?” Elena reached behind her back, her fingers sliding into the small interior pocket sewn into the lining of her wedding gown. She pulled out a sleek, older-model flash drive—an encrypted physical key that bypassed all cloud networks and corporate servers. “You forgot that I audited your private acquisitions personally before the merger. I didn't trust your financial advisors, so I kept my own ledger.”

Julian’s eyes widened as he saw the device. A flicker of hope broke through his tense expression.

Marcus slammed his scotch glass down onto the bar cart, the crystal shattering into jagged pieces that scattered across the floor. The polite mask was entirely gone now, replaced by a dark, threatening intensity as he took a rapid step forward.

Before Marcus could cross the room to wrench the flash drive from her hand, the heavy mahogany doors burst open, and three uniformed police officers rushed into the hall, their hands resting on the holstered weapons at their hips.

“Nobody move!” the lead officer shouted, his eyes scanning the room and immediately locking onto Elena, who was holding the encrypted drive in plain view.
