Chapter 4: The Officer’s Choice

The blinding beam of a tactical flashlight swept across the opulent interior of the banquet hall, cutting through the warm amber glow of the chandeliers. The lead officer, a weathered sergeant with graying hair and sharp, suspicious eyes, kept his hand steady on his holster as he stepped further into the room. His gaze darted from Marcus’s composed stance to Julian’s tense posture, finally resting squarely on Elena, who stood beside the wedding table with the small flash drive clutched in her right hand.
“Put your hands where we can see them,” the sergeant commanded, his voice echoing off the marble pillars. “We received an anonymous tip regarding a high-value financial fraud in progress at this location.”
Marcus raised his hands in a gesture of absolute, helpless innocence. A masterclass in public manipulation, his facial expression immediately shifted to one of profound distress and exhaustion. “Thank God you’re here, Officer. My wife—or rather, the woman who manipulated me into this marriage—has been running an unauthorized corporate liquidation behind my back. That flash drive contains stolen client assets, and she was just attempting to destroy the physical evidence.”
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at the sergeant, desperate to read his expression, but the man’s face was an impenetrable wall of professional detachment. She stepped forward, keeping her movements slow and deliberate. “Officer, don’t listen to him. That man is Marcus Vance. The entire corporate embezzlement scheme was orchestrated through his shell companies. This drive contains the verifiable proof—including his biometric signatures and encrypted internal emails.”
Julian stepped up beside Elena, raising his palms as well. “She’s telling the truth, Sergeant. I’m an independent forensic investigator. I’ve spent the last three months tracking these exact wire transfers. Marcus used his wife’s identity as a legal shield without her knowledge.”
The sergeant lowered his flashlight slightly, his eyes narrowing as he looked between the three of them. He signaled to the two junior officers flanking him. “Secure the table. Bag the documents in that manila folder. And detain all three individuals until we can verify the corporate registry and bank warrants.”
“You’re making a monumental mistake,” Marcus warned quietly, his voice carrying an underlying threat that only Elena and Julian were close enough to hear. “My legal team will have your badge before the sun comes up.”
The junior officers moved in quickly, zip-ties in hand. Julian offered no resistance as his wrists were bound behind his back, his jaw clenched in frustration. When the officer approached Elena, she didn't pull away, but she held the flash drive tightly against her chest, refusing to surrender the digital key that could destroy Marcus’s entire empire.
“Give me the drive, ma’am,” the officer instructed, his tone firm but not unkind. “It will be logged into evidence safely. I promise you.”
Elena hesitated, her eyes locking onto Marcus, who was watching her with a triumphant, wicked smirk. With a heavy heart, she opened her fingers and dropped the small black drive into the officer’s outstretched palm.

As the officer placed the drive into an anti-static evidence bag, his radio crackled to life with a frantic dispatch update that made every person in the room freeze.
