Chapter 7

Julian pulled a small, heavy brass key from his pocket—the manual override for the electronic toll barrier. He walked past the hood of the silver sedan, ignoring Elena’s tense posture as she kept her foot hovering over the accelerator, ready to bolt. He inserted the key into the side panel of the toll mechanism and gave it a sharp twist. With a heavy mechanical clunk, the red digital light turned green, and the metal barrier arm slowly lifted into the gray sky. Julian did not look back at the car as he withdrew the key. He simply turned around, walked back toward his own vehicle, and leaned against the fender, watching her with an expression of quiet, detached observation. He wasn't stopping her physically; he knew he didn't need to. The estate was isolated, the local roads were confusing without a map or a phone, and Elena had no money, no ID, and no place to hide that he couldn't reach within an hour. He was letting her run because he knew the leash was long enough to let her think she was free, but short enough to pull her back whenever he chose. Elena stared at him through the windshield, her heart pounding with a mixture of relief and deep, gnawing terror. She didn't trust his compliance. She knew that every second she spent within the perimeter of his influence was a risk. Without another word, she dropped the gearshift into drive, stepped hard on the gas, and shot past the open barrier, leaving the tollbooth behind in a spray of loose gravel. Julian watched the taillights fade around the bend of the highway until they were swallowed by the mist. Then, he pulled out his phone, dialed a ten-digit number, and spoke without preamble when the line connected. "Thomas. She’s heading south toward the coast road. Make sure the cabin at the point is unlocked and ready. We’re going to have guests by evening." He hung up before Thomas could reply, climbed back into his black sedan, and turned the wheel to follow at a discreet, untraceable distance.
