Chapter 15

The morning sun broke over the Atlantic horizon, flooding St. Jude Manor with brilliant, uncompromising light. Downstairs in the grand dining room, the long mahogany table was set for a breakfast that no one would eat. Julian sat at the head of the table, reading the financial broadsheets while sipping black coffee from a bone-china cup. Thomas sat opposite him, looking exhausted and tense, scrolling through emails on his tablet. The heavy double wooden doors of the dining room swung open, and Elena walked in. She was dressed not in her wedding gown, but in a simple, dark wool travel suit, her hair tied back neatly. With one hand, she held Lily’s small, warm hand; with the other, she carried a single overnight bag. Julian lowered his newspaper, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he assessed her posture. "Going somewhere, Elena?" he asked, his voice entirely devoid of surprise, carrying only a cold, clinical curiosity. "Yes," Elena said, her voice steady and clear, echoing off the high plaster moldings of the room. "We're leaving. And this time, there won't be a car chase." Before Julian could set his coffee cup down, the heavy oak front doors of the manor echoed with a series of loud, authoritative knocks that rattled the crystal chandelier overhead. Simultaneously, the sound of heavy boots on the marble hallway announced the arrival of federal agents led by armed marshals, their badges gleaming in the morning light. Thomas stood up so fast his chair overturned with a loud crash, his face draining of all color. Julian remained seated, his expression freezing into a mask of absolute, unyielding stone as he looked at his wife. Elena did not flinch. She looked down at Lily, gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, and turned toward the open double doors where salvation was finally waiting. The Vance empire was crumbling around them, not with a dramatic scream, but with the quiet, devastating click of handcuffs closing around guilty wrists. Elena walked out into the sunlight, leaving the dark halls of St. Jude Manor behind forever.
