Chapter 12

The return journey to St. Jude Manor was conducted in a heavy, suffocating silence. Elena sat in the backseat of Thomas’s car with Lily clutched tightly against her chest, the little girl’s breathing having finally slowed to a quiet, exhausted rhythm as she drifted off to sleep. In the front passenger seat, Thomas stared out the window at the dark coastline, while Julian drove, his hands resting lightly on the leather-wrapped steering wheel of his black sedan, which Thomas had driven back to meet them. The atmosphere inside the cabin felt like a tomb. None of them spoke. Julian’s profile was illuminated intermittently by the headlights of passing vehicles, his jaw set in a rigid line of absolute control. He had won this round, but the victory tasted like ash. He knew that the illusion of domestic perfection was permanently fractured; the cracks would always be visible to anyone sharp enough to look. Yet, in Julian’s world, control was everything, and he had successfully pulled his errant wife and child back inside the perimeter. As the wrought-iron gates of St. Jude Manor loomed out of the mist, swinging open automatically as Julian’s headlights hit the sensor, Elena felt a cold dread settle deep into her bones. The wedding reception had long since ended, the guests dispersed with polite excuses about sudden illnesses, leaving the massive estate dark and empty save for a few perimeter security lights. Julian parked the car in the underground garage, cutting the engine with a soft click. He turned around in his seat, looking back at Elena and Lily in the dim red glow of the dashboard lights. "Welcome home, Elena," Julian said softly, his voice devoid of triumph, carrying only an eerie, flat normality. "Let's get the little one to bed. We have a very busy week ahead of us." Elena did not answer. She gently shifted the sleeping child in her arms, opened the car door, and stepped out onto the cold concrete floor of the garage, knowing that the real war had only just begun.
