Chapter 11

Elena lowered the iron poker just a fraction, her mind racing through her limited options. The front door was blocked by Thomas. The back door led out onto a rocky cliff with a sheer drop into the freezing surf. There was no phone, no car keys—she had left the keys in the ignition of the sedan outside, and Thomas had undoubtedly pocketed them or blocked them in with his own vehicle. She was trapped in a trap of her own making, realizing too late that running to an abandoned family refuge without a concrete escape plan was a fatal miscalculation. On the sofa, Lily began to cry softly, the sound muffled by the fleece blanket as she realized a strange man was in the room. Thomas looked toward the child, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his features before he masked it with professional indifference. "She's working herself into a panic, Elena. Is that what you want? To terrorize your own daughter just to make a point against a man who provides you with everything?" "He doesn't provide love, Thomas. He provides a cage," Elena spat, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "A cage with gold bars is still a cage," Thomas replied smoothly, taking another step closer. "And outside of it, you have nothing. No money of your own, no legal standing that wouldn't be eaten alive by Julian’s legal team within twenty-four hours, and no place to hide that we couldn't find in an afternoon. You lost the moment you decided to make a scene in that hallway." Elena looked down at Lily, the little girl's terrified eyes peering out from beneath the blanket. She knew Thomas was right about their practical circumstances, but her soul revolted against the idea of surrendering. Yet, fighting a losing battle here in the dark would only traumatize Lily further. She had to buy time. She had to find a way to wedge open a weakness in the Vance brothers' united front. "If I go back with you," Elena said slowly, her voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled register, "it will be on my terms. Not a word to the guests, no forced smiles for the society columns, and Lily stays with me every second of the day and night. If Julian breaks that rule even once, I will burn his entire empire to the ground, legal consequences be damned." Thomas studied her for a long moment, visibly weighing her threat. He knew Elena was not entirely powerless; she came from old money herself, though she had alienated her family by marrying Julian. If she chose to go nuclear with the right contacts, it could cause significant collateral damage to the corporate merger they were finalizing next week. "Accepted," Thomas said finally, holding out his hand. "Come along, Elena. Julian is waiting in the car down the road."
