Chapter 8 - The Financial Avalanche

The red digits on the massive projection screen flashed furiously downward, shedding billions of dollars in market capitalization with every passing second. The automated emergency trading halts implemented by the New York Stock Exchange failed to stem the bleeding as institutional investors dumped their Sterling-Vance holdings en masse. Across the ballroom, high-powered executives stared at their blacked-out phones in sheer horror, realizing that the corporate empire they had spent decades building was turning into radioactive ash before their eyes.

Julian stood in the center of the dais, his arms handcuffed behind his back, his posture slumping as the reality of his financial ruin set in. The immaculate black tuxedo that had cost more than an average family’s annual income now felt like a straitjacket designed for a condemned man.

“Your accounts have been frozen, Mr. Sterling,” the federal marshal said quietly, tightening his grip on Julian’s elbow to guide him toward the stairs. “Every offshore subsidiary, every real estate portfolio in Manhattan and the Hamptons, and every personal trust fund has been seized under the RICO Act.”

Julian didn't fight. His eyes were glazed over, fixed on the red ticker as it crossed the threshold of total bankruptcy.

“The board,” Julian muttered, his voice hollow. “They’ll bail me out. They have too much skin in the game.”

“The board was arrested twenty minutes ago during a simultaneous raid at the corporate headquarters,” Elena replied, standing a few feet away with her hands folded neatly inside the pockets of her worn gray coat. She looked at him not with hatred, but with a profound, chilling indifference. “Your loyal directors were the first ones to hand over the ledger encryption keys in exchange for federal immunity.”

Clara was still on her knees, sobbing uncontrollably as two female marshals approached her with a second set of handcuffs. The pristine white silk of her designer wedding dress was now thoroughly ruined, stained with wine, dirt, and her own smeared mascara.

“Don’t touch me!” Clara wept, pulling her arms away before submitting with a pathetic whimper as the steel clicked into place. “My father will destroy you all! He owns half the federal judiciary!”

“Your father had a massive stroke at his Manhattan residence forty minutes ago when the SEC warrants were delivered,” Maya said smoothly, stepping up beside her mother and adjusting the collar of her mustard-yellow cardigan. “The doctors say he won't regain consciousness before the trial begins.”

Clara stopped struggling, her jaw dropping open as the final pillar of her security crunched beneath her feet. The Vance dynasty, built on a foundation of ruthless backstabbing and hidden bodies, had collapsed into dust in less than an hour.

Elena turned her back on her weeping sister and her ruined former fiancé, walking slowly toward the edge of the dais to address the stunned crowd of elites who were desperately trying to figure out how to salvage their own reputations.

“The wedding is officially canceled,” Elena announced, her voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom. “Now, if everyone would kindly direct their attention to the rear doors, federal marshals have prepared escort vehicles for every single person who accepted a bribe or insider tip from Sterling-Vance Holdings over the past decade.”
