Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

The amber light from the projection screen cast long, skeletal shadows across the faces of the wedding guests. The atmosphere in the grand ballroom had shifted instantaneously from a celebration of unbridled wealth to a suffocating courtroom where judgment was already being rendered. Julian stood frozen, his mind desperately calculating the statute of limitations on involuntary confinement and corporate fraud. Every asset he owned, every share of Sterling-Vance Holdings, was tied directly to the clean legal title of the estate he had inherited after Elena’s disappearance.

“Mr. Sterling,” the federal marshal said, his voice cutting through the suffocating silence. He produced a crisp, folded document from his inside coat pocket and held it out. “By order of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, you are being served with a federal subpoena for asset forfeiture and a warrant for your immediate arrest on charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice.”

Julian didn't reach for the paper. His gaze remained locked on the projection screen, where the audio recording had shifted to a phone call between Julian and Elena’s attending physician at the clandestine facility.

“You said she wouldn't remember anything after the electroshock therapy,” Julian’s recorded voice resonated coldly through the speakers, devoid of any human warmth.

“The memory loss is permanent, Mr. Sterling,” the doctor’s voice replied on the tape. “She thinks her name is a series of numbers now. She poses no further threat to the merger.”

Clara stumbled backward, her white wedding dress catching on the leg of the dais, sending her sprawling onto the hardwood floor. The floral appliqués on her skirt were stained with spilled wine and dust, a grotesque mirror image of the ruined evening. She looked up at Julian, her eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and pure, unadulterated terror.

“You lied to me,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling as tears finally cut tracks through her meticulously applied makeup. “You told me she walked away willingly with a settlement package. You told me our hands were clean!”

“Our hands were never clean, Clara,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a flat, dead monotone as he finally turned to look down at her. “You were the one who suggested the psychiatric clinic in the first place when you found out she was pregnant with my firstborn.”

Maya stepped forward, the microphone picking up the sharp, rhythmic clicking of her small shoes against the floor. She knelt beside Clara, leaning down so her face was inches from the frantic bride.

“She didn't die in that clinic either, Clara,” Maya whispered, her dark eyes flashing with a cold intelligence far beyond her years. “She escaped two weeks ago, and she’s standing right outside those double doors.”
