Chapter 11 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Arthur Vance walked with a slow, deliberate limp, leaning heavily on a polished darkwood cane that tapped rhythmically against the floorboards. The room fell into an even deeper, more terrified silence. If Arthur Vance was here, it meant the federal investigation wasn't just a corporate sweep—it was a systemic decapitation of the entire political-financial cartel that had ruled the eastern seaboard for thirty years.
Julian stared at the older man, his lips parting in silent disbelief. “Arthur... I thought you were in Geneva. Your medical team said you had terminal—”
“Terminal corruption, Julian? Yes, that diagnosis was entirely accurate,” Arthur interrupted, stopping three paces away from the handcuffed pair. He looked down at his niece Clara, whose ruined bridal gown was now soaked with spilled champagne and her own tears. “And you, my dear niece. Did you really think your father and I didn't know you were skimming off the top of the Cayman accounts to fund your secret properties in London?”
Clara’s face lost every remaining trace of color. She staggered backward, ignoring the restraint of the female marshals. “That’s a lie! Dad told me those accounts were my independent inheritance!”
“Your father built his fortune by selling out his own brothers and framing his business partners,” Arthur said coldly, his voice devoid of familial warmth. He turned his gaze toward Elena and Maya, giving them a respectful nod before returning his attention to Julian. “Julian, you were always the smartest shark in the tank, but you lacked imagination. You thought Elena was a liability because she refused to launder drug money through the charity foundations.”
Julian felt his knees grow weak. The web of deceit he had spent a lifetime weaving wasn't just unraveling; it had been constructed by design to trap him from the very beginning.
“You set me up,” Julian whispered, the realization hitting him with the force of a freight train. “The merger... the board seats... the acquisition of Elena’s company. You engineered the entire thing from the start to take over Sterling-Vance Holdings without spending a dime of your own capital.”
“Of course we did,” Arthur replied smoothly, tapping his cane against the floor. “A multi-billion-dollar corporation cannot be inherited by an outsider with a conscience. We needed a greedy, ambitious fool to run the day-to-day operations while we pulled the strings from the shadows. And you played your part with absolute perfection.”
Clara let out a choked, hysterical laugh that quickly turned into sobbing. “We sold our souls for a company that was already bankrupt on paper.”
“Not bankrupt, Clara,” Arthur corrected with a chilling smile. “Just fully liquidated to pay for our immunity deals.”

Before Julian could lunge forward in a blind rage, federal agents grabbed his shoulders and yanked him backward toward the open service doors, where the flashing red lights of the transport vans cast a violent, pulsating glow across the entire ballroom.
