Chapter 1 - The Broken Vows

The crystal chandeliers of the St.arlight Grand Ballroom cast a blinding, diamond-like refraction across the polished mahogany floor. Around the sprawling tables, three hundred elite guests sat in stunned silence, their champagne flutes suspended halfway to their lips. At the head of the dais, Julian Sterling stood tall in his immaculate black tuxedo and crisp white bowtie, his chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged rhythms. Opposite him, Clara Vance smoothed the floral details of her strapless white wedding dress, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the delicate fabric. Between them stood ten-year-old Maya, her long dark hair falling neatly over a mustard-yellow cardigan. In her small, steady hand, she held a wireless microphone that hummed with a low, predatory current. Behind them, the massive projection screen flickered, illuminating a woman’s melancholic portrait against the amber backdrop.

Maya’s voice cut through the heavy air, soft yet impossibly clear.

“Before she does, you should watch this.”

Julian stared down at the child, his breath hitching in his throat. His mind scrambled backward through a decade of calculated legal contracts, quiet corporate mergers, and carefully curated social appearances.

“Maya, sweetheart,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling beneath a veneer of forced composure. “Put the microphone down right now. This is a private matter between adults.”

“It’s not private anymore, Uncle Julian,” Maya replied, her gaze unwavering. “My mother tried to tell you for three years before they silenced her. You just refused to listen because the truth was inconvenient for your stock portfolio.”

Clara stepped forward, her hands flying up in a frantic gesture of distress and absolute denial.

“I didn't know about it!” Clara cried out, her voice cracking as she looked wildly around the room at the whispering crowd. “Julian, you have to believe me! I swear on my life I had nothing to do with whatever sick game this child is playing!”

“Stop lying, Clara,” Maya said coldly, turning her head toward the massive screen behind them. “You bought the silence, and my mother paid the ultimate price.”

The projection screen flickered violently, the amber light shifting to a blinding, stark white as a hidden folder began to upload automatically from the microphone's encrypted drive.
