Chapter 6

Julian stood amidst the scattered papers of his study until the first pale light of dawn filtered through the sheer curtains. He refused to let despair paralyze him. Marcus’s arrogance had left a fatal flaw: the attorney had been so focused on physical documents that he had overlooked the digital infrastructure of Julian’s enterprise.
Working methodically, Julian booted up his desktop computer, bypassing the main server to access an encrypted, offline backup drive stored in the ceiling panels. If Marcus and Elena had manipulated his physical files, the digital access logs would tell the true story of who accessed the network, when the forgeries were uploaded, and where the funds were actually routed.
Hours blurred together. The hum of the computer fan was the only sound in the silent house. Grandmother had settled into the guest room upstairs with the baby, who remained healthy, peaceful, and entirely innocent of the corporate conspiracy swirling around them.
At mid-morning, Julian’s screen flashed with a decrypted audit log from six months prior—the exact date of the alleged pre-nuptial signing. His eyes scanned the lines of code and metadata. There it was. The access token did not originate from his office terminal. It traced directly to an external IP address registered to a shell company owned by Marcus’s law firm, co-signed by an electronic authorization key bearing Elena’s personal biometric stamp.
They hadn't just forged his signature; they had used his digital identity while he was under anesthesia during a minor knee surgery the previous winter. The realization hit Julian with staggering clarity. That hospital stay, arranged and insisted upon by Elena, had been the Trojan horse.
Julian immediately exported the audit logs, securing multiple copies on encrypted flash drives and sending an automated secure packet to a trusted federal prosecutor he had known since college. He needed formal leverage, not just proof.
As he leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his burning eyes, his phone buzzed violently on the desk. It was an unknown number, but the text message preview made his heart skip a beat.

“You’re playing a game you cannot win, Julian. Drop the investigation, pay the vendor invoices currently pending, and the child’s true identity remains sealed. Choose poorly, and you lose everything by tomorrow noon.”
Julian stared at the screen, his jaw clenching. They thought he would fold under the pressure of protecting the child. They miscalculated. The threat didn't intimidate him; it galvanized his resolve. He wasn't just defending his finances anymore; he was defending an innocent life from being used as a pawn in their extortion scheme.
