Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the head table cast a shimmering, fractured light across the grand ballroom of the St. Clair Hotel. Julian sat in his sharp white tuxedo, the matching vest crisp against his chest, feeling the heavy hum of two hundred affluent guests whispering behind him. Beside the white linen tablecloth rested the open manila folder containing the itemized catering invoice. For months, Julian had managed every meticulous detail of this high-society wedding, believing he was crafting the ultimate evening for Elena. But as Elena stood before him, her long red hair cascading over the strap of her dark green satin dress, the celebratory atmosphere dissolved instantly.
Elena’s posture was rigid, her jaw set with a chilling finality. She did not look like a glowing bride; she looked like a prosecutor delivering a closing argument. A few feet away, Grandmother sat quietly in a beige armchair, cradling the sleeping infant wrapped tightly in a white blanket, completely unaware of the sudden emotional earthquake erupting around her.
Julian looked up from the table, his initial confident smile fading as the silence stretched between them. He had expected laughter, playful banter about the exorbitant costs, or perhaps a toast. Instead, Elena’s voice cut through the ambient ballroom noise with absolute clarity.
“It’s not my child, so why should I pay?”

The words hung in the air like breaking glass. Julian’s smile vanished entirely, his jaw dropping in shock as he stared wide-eyed at the woman he had loved and planned a future with for three years. His mind raced backward, desperately searching for context, for a joke, for anything that could reframe the absurdity of her statement. But Elena’s green eyes were ice cold, devoid of warmth or hesitation.
His fingers began to twitch over the crisp white pages of the billing statement inside the manila folder. A bead of sweat formed instantly at his hairline, tracking slowly down his temple. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded his veins. The guests at the surrounding tables suddenly grew quiet, sensing the sudden shift in the room's energy. Julian tried to form words, his mouth parting slightly, but his vocal cords refused to cooperate. The sheer absurdity of the accusation paralyzed him. It was not merely a disagreement over a wedding bill; it was a devastating fracture in reality itself.
