THE WEDDING BILL NIGHTMARE / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4

At two in the morning, the hotel suite felt less like a luxury retreat and more like an interrogation cell. Grandmother sat in the armchair by the window, the infant still sleeping soundly against her shoulder. The soft glow of a single floor lamp cast long shadows across the carpet, highlighting the exhaustion etched into the elderly woman’s weathered face.

Julian knelt beside her, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the baby. He held the medical files he had found in the envelope, the pages illuminated by the amber city glow.

“Grandmother, please,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Look at me. Who brought this child to the house last week? Who authorized these documents?”

Grandmother blinked slowly, her gaze drifting from the city lights to Julian’s strained face. She reached out with a trembling, age-spotted hand and gently touched his cheek, wiping away the lingering dampness of his sweat.

“You did, Julian,” she said softly, her voice raspy with age and confusion. “You brought the papers home in that brown folder. You said it was the adoption decree. You said we were finally safe.”

Julian closed his eyes, a sharp pain piercing his chest. He had never signed those papers. He had never initiated an adoption. Elena must have used his home office, forged his signature during one of his business trips, and manipulated Grandmother into believing the narrative. The web of fraud was deeper and more insidious than he had initially feared.

“Grandmother, I didn’t,” Julian said, keeping his tone calm and steady for her sake. “I never saw those papers until tonight. Elena... Elena set this up. She used my identity.”

The old woman went still. A flicker of realization, dark and troubled, crossed her features. She looked down at the white blanket cradling the innocent infant. “She was always so particular about the paperwork, Julian. She insisted on keeping the files in your study, locked in the bottom drawer. She said you were too careless with your business affairs.”

Julian exhaled slowly, feeling the pieces click together with horrifying precision. He was the designated scapegoat. Every debt, every legal obligation, and now the custody and care of a child whose origins were entirely shrouded in deception had been funneled onto his shoulders while Elena walked away clean, rich, and legally untouchable.

“We need to leave this hotel tonight,” Julian said firmly, standing up and buttoning his vest. “We are going back to the family home. I need to secure my office before anyone else accesses those files.”

Grandmother nodded slowly, her trust in Julian absolute despite the chaos surrounding them. As she stood up, adjusting the baby safely in her arms, Julian looked at his reflection in the dark window. The terrified groom from the ballroom was gone. In his place stood a man driven by the singular, burning need to dismantle the trap that had been laid for him.
