Chapter 7 - The Handcuffs and the Missing Key

"Wait, you don't understand!" Clara screamed, scrambling up from the floor and putting herself directly between the tactical officer and her husband. "He didn't do anything! He was just trying to protect our son from him!"
The officer paused, lowering his flashlight slightly as he looked at Clara's tear-stained face and her ruined silk blouse. He glanced back at Arthur, whose hands were still raised in the air, his expression one of grim resignation.
"Step aside, ma'am," the officer instructed firmly, though his tone lost a fraction of its aggression. "We received an anonymous digital drop containing active warrants and property deeds tied directly to this address. Mr. Miller is named as the primary custodian of concealed assets linked to the 2012 arson investigation."
"That's impossible," Arthur spoke for the first time since the glass broke, his voice remarkably steady despite the chaotic scene unfolding around him. "Those assets were frozen and liquidated years ago. Every penny was accounted for in the federal settlement."
"Tell it to the judge, Arthur," Marcus spat from where he was being held against the marble island by the second tactical officer. His face was pressed hard against the cold stone, but his eyes burned with a venomous triumph. "Tell the judge how you managed to buy this house under an assumed name using funds wired directly from an account that supposedly didn't exist anymore."
Julian peeked out from behind his mother's skirt, his heart aching as he watched the cold steel cuffs snap securely around his father's wrists. "Mom, why are they taking Dad? What did he do?"
"Nothing, Julian. Your father didn't do anything wrong," Clara cried, her hands gripping the officer's heavy tactical vest as she begged for an explanation. "Please, just let us explain. There's been a terrible misunderstanding about who actually owns this property."
"Ma'am, I have direct orders to secure all occupants and impound every document on that counter," the lead officer said, gently but firmly pushing Clara back. He motioned to the younger officer holding Marcus. "Bring Sterling out to the transport van. I'll escort Mr. Miller down to the cruiser."
As Arthur turned to follow the officer toward the shattered living room window, his eyes met Julian's for a agonizingly brief second. There was no fear in his gaze—only a deep, heartbreaking sorrow and a silent promise that the boy couldn't possibly understand yet.
"Julian," Arthur said quietly as he passed his son. "Look in the back of the pantry. Behind the flour tin. Don't let anyone else find what's hidden there."

Before Julian could respond, the officer nudged Arthur forward, guiding him out into the bright afternoon sunlight and leaving the kitchen dead silent except for the harsh hum of the refrigerator and the sound of Clara's muffled sobs.
