Chapter 6 - Shattered Glass and Broken Alibis

"Stay down!" Arthur roared, dropping the papers onto the marble island and instinctively shoving Julian behind his broad back.
Clara scrambled backward, her cream-colored silk blouse snagging on the corner of the pantry door as she fell to her knees, dragging Julian down with her into the narrow gap between the refrigerator and the wall. The sound of heavy footsteps pounding across the living room hardwood grew louder by the second, accompanied by harsh, hurried breathing that belonged to at least two unfamiliar individuals.
Marcus didn't run. Instead, he stood frozen by the kitchen island, his face pale and his earlier arrogance completely vanished. He stared toward the hallway entrance, his hand instinctively reaching inside his charcoal suit jacket as if searching for something that wasn't there anymore.
"Police! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!" a booming voice echoed from the hallway, followed immediately by the harsh glare of tactical flashlight beams sweeping wildly across the bright modern kitchen, cutting through the dust motes dancing in the afternoon light.
Julian squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his face into the rough fabric of his mother's blouse as the smell of ozone and damp outdoor air filled the pristine kitchen. He could feel Clara's heart hammering against his cheek like a trapped bird.
"Clear!" a second voice shouted from the dining room. "Kitchen is compromised. Suspects sighted near the island."
Arthur raised his hands slowly into the air, keeping his body positioned entirely between the approaching officers and his terrified family. "We are unarmed. There's a child here. Please, watch your movements; my son is right behind me."
A large man in heavy tactical gear stepped into the kitchen, his assault rifle lowered just an inch as his intense gaze locked onto Arthur, then flickered over to Marcus, who was slowly raising his hands with a look of utter disbelief.
"Marcus Sterling," the officer leading the unit said, his voice cold and authoritative as he recognized the man in the tailored suit. "You've been a very hard man to track down. Put your hands behind your back right now, or you will be subdued."
"You're making a massive mistake, Officer," Marcus hissed, stepping backward until his spine hit the marble island. "I am the complainant here. These people are harboring—"
"You're violating a federal protection boundary, Sterling, and you know it," the officer interrupted, stepping forward and slamming Marcus face-first against the marble counter, the sound of handcuffs clicking sharply into place drowning out the man's angry protests.
Clara clutched Julian tighter, whispering soft, meaningless reassurances into his messy light brown hair while her own eyes remained fixed on the yellowed papers still lying abandoned on the kitchen island.

The lead officer turned his flashlight away from Marcus and shone the blinding beam directly into Arthur's face. "And you, Mr. Miller. It looks like your little secret finally caught up with you. Step away from the child and turn around."
