Chapter 5 - The Cracked Wax and the Missing Name

The dark wax seal shattered into a dozen tiny fragments that scattered across the polished marble island like dark blood droplets. Julian watched, mesmerized and horrified, as his father carefully pulled the thick, yellowed pages from inside the rough brown paper. The air in the kitchen seemed to grow heavy, charged with a static tension that made the hairs on the back of Julian's arms stand straight up.
Arthur unfolded the top document, his eyes scanning the dense typewritten lines with agonizing slowness. As he read, the color completely drained from his face, leaving his skin an ashen gray that matched his work pants. His hands began to shake so violently that the paper rustled loudly in the quiet room.
"What does it say, Arthur?" Clara demanded, stepping closer and gripping the edge of the marble counter for support. "Read it out loud. Don't keep anything from me."
Arthur didn't answer immediately. He swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively as if he were trying to swallow glass. When he finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot and filled with a profound, soul-crushing terror that Julian had never witnessed in an adult before.
"It's not an extortion demand," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling so badly the words were barely recognizable. "It's not about the money from the insurance claim at all."
Marcus's smug smile faltered slightly, replaced by a sudden, sharp glint of unease. He pushed himself off the counter, taking a half-step forward. "What are you talking about? That file contains the complete ledger of the shell accounts. It’s your financial executioner."
"No," Arthur said, his voice rising in pitch as he turned the document around so the stark black lettering faced them. "Look at the signature at the bottom of the property transfer deed, Marcus. Look at who actually bought this land twelve years ago, right after the ashes cooled."
Clara leaned in, her eyes darting across the faded ink signatures at the bottom of the yellowed page. Suddenly, her knees buckled. She let out a choked cry, catching herself against the edge of the island before she hit the floor. Her mouth hung open in silent horror as she stared at the name printed in clear, unmistakable type.
Julian tried to peer around his father's arm to see the paper, but Arthur quickly pulled it back against his chest, shielding his son's eyes with a protective, desperate gesture.
"Dad, whose name is on that paper?" Julian demanded, stepping forward and grabbing the hem of Arthur's dark jacket. "Why is Mom crying? Who bought this house?"

Arthur looked down at his son, tears finally welling in his own dark eyes. He opened his mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the house, followed by the sound of heavy boots shattering the glass of the living room window.
